Women’s Rugby Readies for Contest Versus Virginia Tech

Annapolis, Md. – Navy women's rugby (3-3) travels to Blacksburg, Va., for a matchup versus the Virginia Tech Hokies this Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

"Looking forward to getting out to Blacksburg this weekend, we haven't been in there in quite some time," said head coach Murph McCarthy. "Virginia Tech has some good players that represented the region on an all-star team last year. We've also hosted some training sessions for them at Prusmack Rugby Center. We had a really good week of practice so excited to see where we are as a team."

Recap of Davenport Match
Navy wasn't able to limit a high-scoring Davenport squad last weekend, falling to the Panthers 44-5.

Davenport got off to a quick start on its home field, scoring a try just 1:57 in the match. The Panthers added another try in the ninth minute to take a two-score lead, but Navy's defense stepped up over the next 20 minutes. Davenport eventually managed to make another score in the 34th minute to take a 15-0 lead at halftime.

Davenport continued to add to its lead in the second half, scoring another five tries to put Navy at a 44-0 deficit. The Mids finally got on the board with an impressive score in the 78th minute from Marissa Meyer. Navy was behind its 22-meter line but Meyer got outside of Davenport's defense and outran everyone for Navy's lone score of the match.

Meyer Adds Another Score
Marissa Meyer has been a big contributor to Navy's offense this season. The sophomore has scored three tries, which ranks second on the team. Meyer is third on the team with 15 points this season and is one of only five players to score at least 10 points.

Points Make the Difference
Navy's success this season has come when they've been able to rack up a lot of points in matches. In Navy's three wins, they've scored 89 points but just 18 in its three losses. Additionally, Navy's defense has surrendered far fewer points in victories. Navy has allowed just 15 points in its three wins but 125 in its three losses.
