After defeating
Ryan York in five games a year ago to win his first Barb Tournament, Navy senior squash standout
Millen Randell (Chicago, Ill.) swept teammate
Matt Wang (So / Malvern, Pa.) in three games (17-15, 11-7, 11-7) last Friday to win the tournament for a second-straight year.
Established in 1957 by the late Admiral Eugene Fluckey, a Medal of Honor recipient, the Barb has seen 42 different midshipmen win the coveted trophy. Sixteen men have claimed ownership of the trophy multiple times with six players (Spencer Wall 84-86, Jamie Slough 92-94, Andy McCann 00-02, Tucker George 05-08, Andrew McGuinness 12, 14-15, Jack Lentz 18-20) winning it three times. Randell will receive a ships clock at the Prizes and Awards ceremony during Commissioning Week and his name will be engraved on the Barb Trophy.
The week-long Barb Tournament pits the Navy squash players against one another in a round robin competition which then sets up an elimination tournament. The tournament results determine Navy's starting lineup to begin the season which is slated to officially kick off in Charlotte, N.C. the weekend of Nov. 5-6. The Mids, however, will get a final tuneup for their opener when they welcome back former players for the annual Bowen Cup alumni match slated for Saturday morning (8:00 pm) at the Prager Family Squash Facility.
