Recap of Virginia Tech Match
Navy had its best offensive showing in its inaugural season to help stop a two-game losing skid. The Mids dominated Virginia Tech 51-7 in Blacksburg, Va., for their fourth win of the season.
Navy quickly established a 12-0 lead on a try from
Megan Leitz and a penalty try after a score from
Marissa Meyer.
Kyndall Wyngaard scored her first try of the season in the 25
th minute and Meyer added her second score of the match three minutes later to put Navy ahead 22-0.
Grace Oliver then took over for Navy, scoring a pair of tries in the 34
th and 40
th minute to give Navy a 34-0 lead at halftime.
Leitz made the opening score of the second half in the 47
th minute, but Virginia Tech answered with its first score less than two minutes later to make the score 39-7. Navy's defense wouldn't budge for the remainder of the match and the offense added another pair of scores from
Sage McCallum and Meyer.
Best Offense of the Season
Navy produced a season high 51 points in its win over the Hokies. Navy scored a season best nine tries in the match after having scored just two tries in its previous two matches. The nine tries scored against the Hokies account for one-third of Navy's total tries this season.
Meyer's Big Day
Marissa Meyer had a historic performance for Navy women's rugby, scoring three tries to finish the match with 15 points. Meyer is the first Mid to score more than two tries in a match and scored the most points in a match for Navy this season. Her 15 points were more than Navy had scored as a team in its two previous matches combined (13 points). Meyer also passed
Ana Olszewski as Navy's top scorer, now with 30 total points on six tries.
Other Double-Digit Scorers
Meyer wasn't the only Mid to finish Saturday's contest in double figures.
Grace Oliver and
Megan Leitz both scored two tries to finish the match with ten points. Neither player had scored entering the match but are now tied with McCallum and
Chelsey Washington for fifth on the team in scoring. Additionally, Leitz, Meyer and Oliver join Washington as the only Mids to score at least ten points in a match this season.
