ANNAPOLIS, Md. --
Jordan Llewellyn (Jr., Port Deposit, Md.),
Jamie Llewellyn (Jr., Port Deposit, Md.) and
Maggie Bodman (Jr., Northbrook, Ill.) combined for 44 of Navy's 64 kills in a four-set victory by the Mids (9-7, 6-1 Patriot League) over Colgate (13-4, 6-1), Friday night at the Wesley A. Brown Field House in Annapolis. The 23-25, 28-26, 28-26, 25-12 decision gives the Mids five-straight wins, six-straight home wins this season and eight-straight Patriot League home wins dating back to last season. Additionally, the result ends an 11-match winning streak for the Raiders.
The first three sets saw the score tied 43 times, the lead change hands 18 times and take one hour and 45 minutes to complete.
"Matches like this come down to inches," said Navy head coach
Paco Labrador. "Both teams played their hearts out. We knew Colgate was going to make us earn every point tonight, and they certainly did."
Set One
Colgate led, 20-18, then the Mids took a 22-20 advantage. The Raiders scored the next three points before a kill from
Jamie Llewellyn tied the score for the 10th time. A kill by Colgate's Carlie Rzeszotarski took the Raiders to set point. A
Jamie Llewellyn attack error gave the opening frame to the visitors.
Navy posted more kills than Colgate in the set, 15-10, but the Mids had nine attack errors to just two for the Raiders. Colgate registered five of its eight blocks for the match in the first set.
Set Two
Just as in set one, Colgate took an early four-point lead in set two. The Mids trailed 13-9 but were able to tie the set at 13-13. From there, the score was tied at every point through 19-19. Colgate was able to take a 23-20 advantage, then
Jamie Llewellyn tallied a block. That was followed by her tallying a kill to make the score 23-22. Colgate answered with a kill to reach set point, 24-22. A broken play on Navy's side of the court led to setter
Averi Miller (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.) recording a kill to extend the set. Bodman followed with a kill to tie the score at 24-24.
Colgate had another chance to serve for the set as a kill gave it a 25-24 lead. Navy erased it with a kill by Bodman, then a Colgate attack error gave the Mids their first serve for the set. A Navy service error quickly tied the score at 26-26.
Jordan Llewellyn returned the serve to the Mids with a kill, then
Anna Klemeyer (Jr., Sarasota, Fla.) and
Jordan Llewellyn combined for a block to tie the match at one set each.
Bodman recorded six kills and no attack errors on 10 attempts in the stanza. Both offenses were clicking as Navy hit .409 and Colgate posted a .359 attack percentage. The difference was the Mids finishing with one attack error to five for the Raiders.
Set Three
The score was tied 19 times in set three and the lead was exchanged nine times after it was traded that many times in the first two sets combined.
A Navy service error and a Colgate kill followed by a Navy attack error gave the Raiders a 24-22 lead and resulted in a Navy timeout. Bodman sliced the margin in half with a kill, then a Colgate attack error tied the score at 24-24. Colgate regained the serve with a kill and had its third set point of the frame. A blocking error by the Raiders, however, tied the set yet again at 25-25.
Rilee Sherman (Jr., Cibolo, Texas) dropped back to serve for the Mids, and her effort was ruled out of bounds on the right sideline, thereby giving Colgate a 26-25 lead. However, Labrador challenged the call and replay proved the ball hit inbounds, which gave Sherman an ace and Navy a 26-25 lead.
Sherman's next serve -- this time to win the set -- resulted in a Colgate kill that tied the score at 26-26.
Ava Toppin (Carolina Beach, N.C.) knocked down a kill on the next play to give the Mids a sideout, the lead and the serve. Miller went to the service line and her effort fell to the ground on the Colgate side of the net to give Navy a 2-1 advantage.
Of Navy's 28 points scored in the set, 21 of them came by way of kills. Conversely, Colgate registered kills on 13 of its 26 points.
Set Four
Colgate was the first team to reach both five and 10 points in each of the first three sets. In set four, Navy took leads of 5-2 and 10-4 to quickly build its largest lead of the match. The Mids extended their lead as a 3-0 run gave them a 15-7 cushion, then it became a 19-10 advantage and soon thereafter Navy defeated Colgate in Annapolis for the second year in a row.
Navy had just nine kills and a .292 hitting percentage in the final set, but limited Colgate to six kills and a (-).185 mark.
Statistical Summary
Navy totaled 64 kills and a .274 hitting percentage and held Colgate to 48 kills and a .194 hitting performance. Navy also held a 12-8 lead in blocks, a 6-4 edge in aces and a 54-50 lead in digs.
