EARLYSVILLE, Va. – The Navy women's rowing program wrapped up its 2022 fall schedule on Sunday afternoon with competition at the Rivanna Romp. Hosted by the University of Virginia on the Rivanna Reservoir, the Mids had crews racing in a trio of events against strong ACC and AAC foes. At the conclusion of the 4,000-meter head-style races, Navy's fleet turned in four top-10 results, including a third-place finish by the Mids' top novice eight crew.
"Today was a good day," remarked head coach
Joe Schlosberg. "We had the opportunity to show the progress we have made over the course of the fall so far. Today was only a snapshot, it was only a small part of our training for the spring championship season. We are all excited to continue to put in some good hard work and have some fun doing it. I know we will continue to grow as we train for the 2023 racing season!"
The first race of the day for the Mids was the Varsity Eights competition. One of six teams with multiple crews racing, Navy went up against Virginia, Duke, Louisville, UCF and UNC. The Mids' A boat finished sixth overall in the field of 20 and third amongst A boats with a time of 13:30.8. Only Virginia and Duke's A crew were superior in the A division to Navy's top crew, as Louisville A finished seventh, UCF A placed eighth and UNC A did not finish (they were eighth at the midway point before failing to complete the race). Navy's second varsity crew came in right behind UCF in ninth place with a 13:48.3 time.
Next up, the Mids split up into small boat action with two entries in the Varsity Fours event. Going up against 26 other crews, Navy A and Navy B finished 13th and 24th respectively with times of 15:18.2 and 15:46.8.
The best results of the day came from Navy's youngest rowers in the Novice Eights contest. Taking on novice crews from Duke, Virginia and UNC, Navy's top boat finished in third behind the Blue Devils and Cavaliers, but ahead of the Tar Heels with a 14:50.7 effort. The Mids' second crew came in fifth overall 33.1 seconds behind at 15:23.8.
Sunday's action is the final for the program until March of 2023 when Navy opens its championship season at the Oak Ridge Invitational.
