ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy rifle team (5-3) finished second overall during the President's Trophy Match on Saturday with a total of 5,849 points, marking its second-highest score in the competition in program history. Additionally, the Midshipmen shot an NCAA four-count score of 4,689 points.
"We had a great performance today even though our total team score may not completely show it," head coach
Mike Anti stated. "A few of our athletes overcame some challenges with equipment and unforeseen rifle failures. In every case our athletes dealt with the situation and were able to post very good scores.
Parker Haydin's rifle had an unrepairable malfunction in the beginning of his event and was forced to use a teammate's rifle to shoot the match. Despite this setback, he was still able to post the highest score of the competition. It was simply an amazing performance.
Mark Dely, a junior, also had a great performance posting his career high in smallbore. It was a very close match between us and Air Force. In fact, we had them by two points after smallbore. We were a bit below our average in air rifle and Air Force had solid performances in that event to take the win."
Scoring for the overall President's Trophy Match features eight starters at most for each team in smallbore and air rifle with the top five scores counting toward each team's final score. The NCAA scoring of starting five shooters in each event with the top four scores counting will still be used for NCAA qualification purposes.
