Most Recent Navy-Georgetown Matchup
Navy began its 2021-22 season with a 73-62 defeat at the hands of Georgetown on Tuesday night at Alumni Hall. Trailing throughout most of the game, the Mids (0-1) drew within two points at 54-52 with under nine minutes to go in regulation, before the taller and more physical Hoyas (1-0) wore down the hosts and pulled away late for the 11-point margin of victory.

Jennifer Coleman started her senior campaign with a strong individual effort as she recorded her 17th career double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds over 39 minutes of action. She was joined in double figures by Kolbi Green, who accounted for 13 points and five assists. Making her first collegiate start, Imani Edmonds nearly made it three Mids in double figures as she finished with eight points, including a pair of three-pointers.

Georgetown held a 17-15 lead after one quarter of play. A lull on the offensive end of the court was the focus of the first four minutes of the second quarter as each team made just one field goal to slowly inch the score ahead to 20-18, Georgetown. The proverbial lid came off the basket over the next six minutes leading into halftime as three-pointers were hit in bunches by both teams. Sparked by Green's trey at 6:02, Coleman and Sydne Watts each hit from long range as Coleman book-ended Watts' three-pointer at 3:26 with treys at 5:08 and 2:54, respectively. Watts drew the score even at 28-28 with 2:23 on the clock as she converted a foul shot attempt. Georgetown responded to this threat with seven unanswered points. Each team added two points down the stretch to send the game into halftime at 37-33 for Georgetown.

The Hoyas began the third quarter with a hot run of play that saw the visitors march out to a then game-high 11-point lead, 48-37 at 6:10. A hard fought steal, jumper and and-one conversion by Coleman helped invigorate the Mids as they went on an 11-3 run from 5:45 to 1:35 to whittle their deficit down to three, 51-48. Green and Edmonds each made three-pointers during this stretch to lead Navy. Edmonds cut Georgetown's lead to just one point in the final minute of play as she cut to the hoop with a slick driving layup with 36 seconds left in the third quarter. The Hoyas went one-for-two at the foul line with tenths of a second on the clock to take a 52-50 advantage into the fourth and final quarter.

Navy kept Georgetown close over the first four-plus minutes of action in the fourth on the strength of two baskets by Kristina Donza, one of which was a three-pointer from the top of the arch at 6:54. With the score 58-55 following that three-point basket by Donza, the Mids ran into foul trouble and a lengthy cold streak on offense, that left them searching for their next made field goal for over six minutes before Mimi Schrader hit a jumper with 34 seconds left in regulation. During that span of play the Hoyas were able to expand their three-point lead out to 12, 70-58. The two teams traded baskets to close out the action as the game went final with a score of 73-62 in favor of Georgetown.

For the game, Georgetown outshot Navy from the field, 43.8 percent (28-64) to 37.0 (20-54) and from three-point range, 43.8 percent (7-16) to 35.7 (10-28). The Mids had an edge in free throw shooting with a 66.7 percent (12-18) showing versus a 47.6 percent (10-21) mark for the Hoyas. The taller Georgetown squad dominated the rebounding battle with a 51-27 advantage in total rebounds, as well as a 19-6 margin in offense boards. That significant differential resulted in a 16-1 edge for the Hoyas in second-chance points.

Last Time Out: Wednesday at Binghamton
The Navy women's basketball team had Binghamton University on the ropes from the start and deep into the fourth quarter before the opportunistic hosts scratched out a come-from-behind 54-51 victory at the Binghamton Events Center on Wednesday night. The Mids (0-10) were sparked by a fast start and 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter, while the Bearcats (6-5) gnawed away at their deficit with small edges in each of the next three quarter-by-quarter scoring totals and took their first lead mid-way through the fourth period.

Sydne Watts was strong for Navy as she posted a game-high 22 points to go along with a season-high seven rebounds over 40 minutes of play. Mimi Schrader provided secondary scoring for the Mids on Wednesday night with 11 points on four-of-seven shooting and three three-pointers. Additionally, the senior team captain grabbed a season-high eight rebounds. Freshman center Kate Samson posted a well-rounded individual statline with six points, nine rebounds and a game-high four blocks.

The action on Wednesday started extremely fast as Navy scored on five of its first seven possessions and ran out to a 12-4 lead by the 6:07 mark of the first quarter. Three-pointers, first by Schrader and later by Watts during this stretch bolstered the Mids' attack. The up-and-down flow of play continued with the teams making shots on both ends of the court. The frenetic pace saw the under-five media timeout last all the way until 2:47.

Holding a 10-point lead of 20-10 after one quarter of play, the game advanced by that same margin through the media timeout of the second quarter as each team slowly added four points to its respective scoring effort. Over the next two minutes from that 5:22 point of the quarter, Binghamton rattled off an 8-3 run to tighten the score to 27-22. Schrader netted Navy's lone field goal in this segment as Watts found her beyond the arc for a three-pointer, her second trey of the half. Watts took over the scoring reins down the stretch with five individual points. Unfortunately for the Mids, the Bearcats recorded five points of their own to send the game to the locker room with just a five-point separation, 32-27.

Navy continued to keep Binghamton at bay in the third quarter as the visitors opened up an eight-point advantage within the first 2:45 of the period as they connected on three of their first four shot attempts. With the score 38-30 in favor of the Mids, the Bearcats buckled down defensively and held Navy without a basket for over four minutes. Though struggling offensively, the Mids' defense stood strong and only allowed the Bearcats to shave four points off their deficit. The quarter concluded with the Bearcats eeking closer to just one point, 42-41, before Watts knocked down a spinning turnaround jumper in the Mids' final possession to make it 44-41.

After scoring 12 points in third quarter, Navy's scoring momentum slowed even further in the fourth as it didn't register a point until the 4:49 juncture of the fourth period. Once again, a solid defensive effort made sure that the Bearcats weren't able to take too much advantage of this cold stretch as Binghamton only netted four points of its own. Down 45-44, Schrader willed the Mids back into the lead as she calmly sank her third three-pointer of the contest to swing Navy ahead 47-45. The teams traded baskets for the next three minutes. A Denai Bowman jump shot for the Bearcats at 1:44 knotted the score for the third time at 51-all. Each team went scoreless over its ensuing possessions until Bowman called her own number with a driving layup to the hoop with 17 seconds left. Navy was unable to respond to that late basket as the Binghamton went 1-2 from the foul line to go up three points before watching Watts' desperation three-point attempt at the final buzzer bounce off the backboard, deflect into the rim, but rattle out at the last second. After all of the dramatics, the Bearcats came away with the 54-51 victory.

For the game, Navy outshot Binghamton from the field, 38.6 percent (22-57) to 37.1 (23-62) and from three-point range, 31.3 percent (5-16) to 9.1 (1-11). The Bearcats bested the Mids in free throw shooting, 63.6 percent (7-11) to 22.2 (2-9).
