Navy Wrestling Opens Dual Competition Versus 23rd-Ranked Maryland

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – After participating in four tournaments to being its 2022-23 campaign, the Navy wrestling team (0-0) competes in its first dual match against 23rd-ranked Maryland (4-0) on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Wesley A. Brown Field House. Admission to the dual is free. 

Notes For Traveling Fans
• Vehicular access to the Naval Academy is limited to those drivers with a Department of Defense identification card. 
• All other visitors may park outside of the Naval Academy grounds and walk through the security gates at Gate 1 or they may take the complimentary shuttles.
• The shuttles will run from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and will pick up spectators at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium (550 Taylor Avenue, Annapolis, Md., 21401). 
• Enter the blue/west parking lot through gate 5 off of Taylor Avenue. 
• The cost of parking is 10 dollars per vehicle.
• Visitors 18 years and older must present a government-issued identification card (driver's license/ passport) to gain access to the Academy grounds, while visitors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Navy Notes
• Head coach Cary Kolat enters the dual season with an 11-6 record at Navy and a 50-46 career record. 
• Navy went 6-5 in duals last season and was a perfect 3-0 in Annapolis. 
• The Mids won their final three duals last year, including a 22-9 victory over Army in the annual Star Match.
• Navy began the season by participating in four tournaments. The Mids took part in the Clarion Open, Bearcat Open, Navy Classic and Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
Grady Griess (285-pounds) was the highlight during the first month of the season. Griess won individual titles at the Clarion Open and Bearcat Open and took second at the Navy Classic.
Andrew Cerniglia (157-pounds) and Jacob Koser (197-pounds) also took individual titles at the Bearcat Open. 
• Six of Navy's projected wrestlers for Sunday have competed in five duals or less in their career. Luke Lucerne (141-pounds) and Kaemen Smith (149-pounds) are projected to make their dual debuts.
• Cerniglia and Josh Koderhandt (141-pounds) return as Navy's top dual performers from a year ago, both finishing 9-2.
• Koser leads the Mids' active roster in all-time dual wins with 22.

Navy Vs. Maryland Series
• Sunday's dual will be the 73rd all-time meeting between the Mids and Terrapins. 
• Navy's series with Maryland is its third largest in program history. Navy has only faced Lehigh (102) and Penn State (86) in more duals.
• The first meeting took place on Jan. 20, 1951, which was a 24-6 Navy win.
• Navy has dominated its in-state rival with a 57-12-3 record. In Annapolis, the Mids own a 34-5-1 record and haven't lost since at home 2012. 
• The Mids' 57 victories over Maryland are its most wins against one program.
• Coach Kolat is 0-2 in his career against Maryland and 0-1 while at Navy.
• Maryland took last year's matchup in College Parks, Md., 18-16, which snapped an eight-match win streak for Navy. 
• Maryland hasn't won back-to-back duals versus Navy since 2011/2012.

Cliff Keen Recap
• Navy placed 14th of 33 teams at the 2022 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
• The 33-team field featured 10 programs ranked among the NWCA Div. I Wrestling Coaches Top 25 Poll, as well as over 100 nationally-ranked wrestlers.
• Koderhandt entered the tournament as a 15-seed but finished fourth in the 141-pound weight class for Navy's top placement in Las Vegas. The sophomore defeated three InterMat ranked opponents, (#31) Lawrence Saenz of Cal Poly by a 7-6 decision, (#20) Darren Miller of Bucknell by a 6-4 decision and (#11) Clay Carlson of South Dakota State by medical forfeit. Koderhandt has now placed at the Cliff Kenn LV Invitational twice after placing fifth at last year's event.
• Koser placed in the invitational for the first time in his career, finishing seventh in his respective weight class. Navy's team captain defeated (#25) Trey Rogers of Hofstra by a 6-0 decision and (#18) Kordell Norfleet of Arizona State by medical forfeit for his two ranked victories over the weekend. 
• Navy was one of 16 programs to place at least two wrestlers in the most prestegious regular season collegiate tournament.

Scouting Maryland
The Terrapins come to Annapolis with a 4-0 record with victories over Bloomsburg (37-6), Duke     (37-0), American (29-10) and #16 Pittsburgh (18-16), which was Maryland's first win over a ranked opponent since 2013. Coach Alex Clemsen's squad is currently ranked 23rd in the nation in the most recent NWCA Div. I Wrestling Coaches Top 25 Poll. Maryland was selected into the NWCA top-25 back on Nov. 22 for the first time since February 2013. Maryland enters the dual with seven ranked wrestlers in its projected lineup, highlighted by 12th-ranked 197-pounder Jaxon Smith. The redshirt freshman owns a 5-2 overall record and a 3-1 dual record. Maryland's heavyweight, (#20) Jaron Smith, is one of the most experienced wrestlers in the nation, currently in his eighth year at Maryland. The veteran opted to return to Maryland for his eighth year despite receiving a contract from WWE over the summer.

The Mids will step away from competition during the final exam and holiday period. Navy will be back in action for the Franklin & Marshall Open, slated for Friday, Jan. 6 at 9 a.m.
