Pair of Doubleheaders on the Weekend Slate for Men’s Tennis

ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The Navy men's tennis team has another four-match weekend ahead of itself as the Mids will play two matches Friday and two on Sunday.  Friday's slate has Navy (7-3) playing at Delaware (2-2) at noon and playing host to Fairmont State (0-0) at 1 p.m. in the Tose Family Tennis Center.  The Mids then play host to Fairleigh Dickinson (2-2) at 9 a.m. Sunday followed by a 12:30 p.m. match against Villanova (1-2).

Additionally, the Knights and the Wildcats will play Saturday at 6 p.m. in Annapolis.

Navy COVID Policy
As per Department of Defense regulations, those who have not been vaccinated must wear a mask at all times when on the USNA grounds, including the Tose Family Tennis Center, and those who have been vaccinated have the option to wear a mask while outdoors but must wear a mask while indoors.

Navy (7-3)
Navy split the two matches it played last weekend, posting a 5-2 win over Bryant and losing a 4-3 decision to Richmond.  Two of Navy's three losses this season have been by the score of 4-3 (St. Francis Brooklyn).

Three Mids posted a pair of victories during the team's win over Bryant.  Derrick Thompson (Sr., Towson, Md.) teamed with Sasha Panyan (So., Lutherville, Md.) for a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles, then Thompson won a 6-4, 7-5 match at No. 1 singles.  Navy's No. 2 doubles team of Finn Garner (Jr., Arnold, Md.) and Jack McBride (Sr., Chapel Hill, N.C.) won a 6-3 decision, then each won their respective singles matches.  Garner posted a 5-7, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 win at No. 2 singles and McBride won a 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 contest at the No. 3 flight.

Gavin Segraves (Jr., Charlottesville, Va.) won two matches in the team's dual against Richmond.  He and teammate Nicholas Nguyen (So., McLean, Va.) won a 7-5 match at No. 2 doubles, then Segraves won, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 1 singles.

Delaware (2-2) 
Friday's match will be contested at the Delcastle Tennis Center in Wilmington, Del.

The Blue Hens opened the year with a 5-2 win over Youngstown State, then lost a 4-3 decision to St. John's.  After recording a 7-0 victory Villanova, Delaware dropped a 7-0 match to VCU.

Delaware ended the 2021 season with a 7-3 record.  Included in that mark was a 5-2 loss to Navy.

Navy holds a 13-0 advantage over Delaware in the all-time series between the teams.  The Mids and the Blue Hens first met in 2007 and have met in every season since then except for 2018 and '20.

Fairmont State (0-0)
Fairmont State, which competes on the NCAA Division II level, will play its first dual match of the season Friday when it plays at Navy.

The Falcons posted a 9-4 record last season.

Friday's match will be the first between Navy and Fairmont State.

Fairleigh Dickinson (2-2) 
Fairleigh Dickinson heads into its Saturday match against Villanova having won back-to-back matches.  The Knights lost a 7-0 decision to Cornell in their season opener, then lost a 4-3 match to Binghamton.  Since then, FDU has posted wins over Hofstra (5-2) and St. Thomas Aquinas (4-3).

Fairleigh Dickinson compiled a 6-5 record last season.  The Knights won the Northeast Conference Tournament and faced Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Navy holds a 4-0 record against Fairleigh Dickinson, with those matches taking place from the 2017-20 seasons.  The Mids won a 5-2 match the last time they played the Knights.

Villanova (1-2) 
Villanova enters its match against the Knights with a 1-2 record on the year.  The Wildcats began the season with a 4-3 win over Jefferson, then lost 7-0 matches to Delaware and Monmouth.

Villanova tallied a 9-11 record during the 2021 season.

Navy has posted an 18-2 record against Villanova.  The teams first met during the 1929-30 season, then squared off again in 1978.  Match number three in the series was held in 1995, and the teams have met in most years since 2001.  The Mids won a 6-1 decision two years ago when they last faced the Wildcats.
