Navy Upsets Second-Seeded Brown in Opener at CSA National Collegiate Team Championship

Ranked 24th and seeded seventh, the Navy men's squash team (13-12) dealt second-seeded Brown (5-6) a 5-4 loss Friday evening in the opening round of the Summers Cup (teams 17-24) at the 2022 Collegiate Squash Association (CSA) National Collegiate Team Championship held at Penn.

The Midshipmen won five of the first six matches, including each of the first four, to secure the win and advance to Saturday's semifinals against third-seeded Amherst who posted a 5-4 win over Dickinson on Friday evening.

Four of the nine players on the ladder for the Mids were making their first appearance and three of the five earned wins on Friday. Among those first-time winners was Matt Wang (#3 / Fr / Malvern, Pa.), Navy's leader in wins this season, who captured his 16th victory of the year in his CSA Championship debut with a 3-0 sweep against Blake Roshkoff.

Tommy Rankin (Jr / Atlanta, Ga.), making his second-career appearance at the championship, earned a 3-1 decision over Samuel Lew to post the Mids' second win of the day. After dropping the opening game 11-9, Rankin fought his way back by winning three in a row and earning his first-career championship win.

Second-year standout Henry Sparkman (#5 / Darien, Conn.) overcame a 2-1 deficit to win the final two games 12-10 and 11-6 and capture the win at #5 against Raghav Pemmireddy in what was his CSA Championship debut.

The Mids made it four in a row when Lucas Spiro (#6 / Fr / Buffalo, N.Y.) won the final three games of his match against Liam Bai to capture his first championship victory, as well.

Gus Prager (#8 / Sr / New York, N.Y.) secured the team victory by way of a 3-2 win against Andrew Willwerth. The two players traded victories with Prager besting his foe with an 11-9 win in the fifth. It, too, was Prager's first CSA Championship victory in just his second tournament.

Meanwhile, Navy's four losses went the distance.

The Mids will face 20th-ranked and third-seeded Amherst on Saturday at 6:30 pm. Navy lost a 6-3 decision to Amherst at the Penn Squash Center in November with team captain Ryan York (Sr / Hunt Valley, Md.), Henry Sparkman and Ben Korn (Sr / Stevenson, Md.) earning wins.
