The 24th-ranked and seventh-seeded Navy squash team (15-12) completed its Cinderella run on Sunday by earning a 5-4 victory over fifth-seeded Tufts (8-7) to win the Summers Division (teams ranked No. 17-24) of the 2022 Collegiate Squash Association (CSA) National Collegiate Team Championship held at the Penn Squash Center. The Mids upset second-seeded Brown in the opening round by a 5-4 count before advancing to the finals behind a 5-4 win against third-seeded Amherst on Saturday evening.
"I'm so proud of this group," said fourth-year Navy head coach
Tyler Osborne. "They have worked incredibly hard this year and have been so close, so many times. It feels really good to see them rewarded for the effort they've put in throughout the year. Our execution went through typical ups and downs, but the team won the energy battle every day this weekend. It's hard to get yourself up day after day, but the way they carried themselves, supported each other and led each other - I couldn't be more proud to be their coach. What a weekend!!!"
The Jumbos jumped out to a 2-0 lead against the Mids with Konrad LaDow and Sanjeev Jeyabalan earning victories at the #9 and #4 positions, respectively.
Navy, though, would get a spark from its team captain
Ryan York (Sr / Hunt Valley, Md.), who fought off Harry Charlton's comeback bid and earned a 3-2 victory at the top spot on the ladder. It would be the first of three-straight wins for the Mids, as
Tommy Rankin (#8 / Jr / Atlanta, Ga.) and
Henry Sparkman (#5 / Darien, Conn.) helped provide the team with a 3-2 advantage. Rankin dropped a 12-10 decision in the opening game against Oliver Eielson, but battled back to win the next three and take a 3-1 win. Meanwhile, Sparkman won the first-two games in his match before Vivaan Jaikishan claimed game three 11-9. Sparkman closed out the match in four, as he took the final game 11-6.
Tufts pulled even in the match thanks to a four-game win by Dillon O'Shea at #8, however, Navy's
Matt Wang (#3 / Fr / Malvern, Pa.) put the Mids ahead once again with his 3-1 victory against Kerwin Teh.
The match would be knotted a final time by the Jumbos when K. Marco Rodriguez scored a 3-1 win at #6.
Locked up at four wins apiece, the match would come down to #2 players
Millen Randell (Jr / Chicago, Ill.) of Navy and Kunal Valia of Tufts. Randell, who earned a big win against Amherst in the semis on Saturday evening, met the challenge and swept Valia to give Navy the 5-4 victory and the Summers Cup title.
The weekend was a complete team effort with seven of the nine players winning at least one match with Wang, Sparkman and Rankin going 3-0. Additionally, a different player clinched the team win in each of the three matches -
Gus Prager vs. Brown,
Henry Sparkman vs. Amherst and
Millen Randell vs. Tufts.
While the team portion of the squash season is complete, will send a handful of players to compete at the National Collegiate Individual Championship slated for March 4-6 at Arlen Specter US Squash Center in Philadelphia, Pa. The 2022 U.S. Intercollegiate Doubles Championship will also be held in conjunction with the National Collegiate Individual Championship at the same venue.
