ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team ran its winning streak to eight matches in a row with a pair of victories Sunday in a split-squad doubleheader.  The Mids (15-3) recorded a 7-0 victory over Duquesne (3-4) in a match played at Pittsburgh and posted a 4-3 win over Fordham (4-5) in a match played in the New York City area.

Navy did not drop a match in posting its victory over Duquesne.  The dual began with the Mids sweeping the three doubles matches.  Navy's No. 1 team of Sasha Panyan (So., Lutherville, Md.) and Derrick Thompson (Sr., Towson, Md.) won a 6-2 decision, then a 6-4 win at the No. 3 flight by Nicholas Nguyen (So., McLean, Va.)and Conners O'Brien (Sr., Rensselaer, N.Y.) gave Navy the 1-0 lead.

The advantage grew to 2-0 when Panyan posted a 6-0, 6-3 win over Jin Dassanyake at the No. 4 flight.  Thompson followed by defeating Kaipo Marshall, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 1 singles.  Clinching the outcome was Jack Dabek (Sr., Dublin, Ohio) when he registered a 6-1, 7-5 victory against Ale Rodriguez-Vidal at the No. 3 flight.

"We saw great doubles play from Conners and Nicholas to come back from a 4-1 deficit to secure the doubles point," said Navy head coach Chris Garner.  "Then we had great starts and finishes in singles from Sasha, Derrick and Jack to get us to four points."

The match between the Mids and the Rams was much closer.  The doubles point was not decided until the third and final match was completed.  The point went to Fordham thanks to their victories at the Nos. 1 and 3 flights.

Navy quickly took a 2-1 lead once singles play began.  Gavin Segraves (Jr., Charlottesville, Va.) posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Tom Russwurm at No. 1 singles, then Finn Garner (Jr., Arnold, Md.) defeated Juan Paredes, 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 2 flight.

Fordham won the ensuing two matches to finish to regain the lead at 3-2.  Jack McBride (Sr., Chapel Hill, N.C.) would knot the score at 3-3 when he defeated Nicholas Kanazirev, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, at No. 3 singles.  That left the No. 4 match between Navy's Luke Garner (Fr., Arnold, Md.) and Fordham's Giorgio Soemarno to determine the final result.  Garner won the first set thanks to a 7-5 win in a tiebreaker, then he won the second set by the score of 6-3 to give Navy the fourth and final point of the day. 

"It was a great job by our guys today," said Navy associate head coach John Moreland.  "After losing the doubles point, quick singles started the rally.  Jack played excellent to save five set points against him in the first set and rally after trailing 5-1 in the tiebreaker.  It was a great team effort to get us a tough road win."

Navy will split its team again this weekend as half will play host to Drexel and half will play at NJIT.  Both matches will be contested Saturday.
