2022 Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Champions

Women's Track & Field

Track and Field Sweeps Patriot League Indoor Championship

The women’s team won for the third consecutive time, while the men’s team won for the eighth time in the last nine meets.

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Navy men's and women's track and field team swept the 2022 Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championship, which was held at Bucknell's Gerhard Fieldhouse in Lewisburg, Pa. For the men, it was the 12th win in program history and the eighth time in the last nine meets that the Midshipmen won the title. On the women's side, it was the sixth indoor title in program history and marked the third consecutive win for the Mids.

"I think we out performed our projections," Director of Navy Track and Field Jamie Cook said. "As a staff, we went into the meet as the underdog on both sides. We won a lot of championships, but it is never easy. This year has been a struggle. There are a lot of good teams in the League who are all improving. For us to be able to win a men's title and a women's title, not to say it was unexpected, but you come to have a championship level performance when you need it and have the team ready when they need to be ready. We went into the meet as underdogs and I am really excited for our athletes and coaches for the time and effort they put in and their competitiveness. Their ability to fight and dig deep when they need to."

The Navy men finished with 264 total points, winning nine of 18 events over the weekend. Army was second with 188.5 points. Boston University was third with 91 points, while Lehigh was fourth with 65 points. Meet host Bucknell rounded out the top five with 47.5 points.

The women's team was able to finish with 202 points, claiming first in seven of 18 events. The Mids finished ahead of the Black Knights who totaled 171 points. Boston was third with 140.5 points, while Bucknell notched 73 points to come in fourth. Lehigh closed out the top five with 60 total points.

Aside from the overall team wins, Navy claimed some individual major awards. Baynes Autrey (Mountain Brook, Ala.) was the Men's Field Athlete of the Meet, and Director of Navy Track and Field Jamie Cook was named both the Men's and Women's Coach of the Year.

Under Cook, the Midshipmen have now won 12 Patriot League Track and Field Championships – three indoor men's titles (2018, '20, '22); three indoor women's titles (2019, '20, '22); three outdoor men's titles (2018, '19, '21); and three outdoor women's titles (2018, '19, '21). In addition, the Navy men's and women's cross country teams claimed the 2021 Patriot League Championships.

"If they are keeping score, then we want to win," Cook stated. "That is what we tell our team. We want to make sure that if there is a title to be had we want to try to win it. From a conference level and Army-Navy perspective, we are trying to win as much as we can. It is fun. Competing is fun. We talk about competition being a privilege for our athletes. Opportunities were taken away the last couple of years so you never know when the next one might be, so when you get the opportunity to compete, put your best foot forward every time. Represent the school the right way. Represent yourselves and your family. I think our athletes did a fantastic job of that this weekend."

As a team, Navy broke seven school records – men's pole vault, women's 60m hurdles, pentathlon, women's long jump, women's 4x800m relay, women's distance medley relay, and heptathlon – during the two-day meet.
