Scouting the Midshipmen
Navy enters the week 4-1 on the young season. The Midshipmen hit the road for the first time last Wednesday, returning home with a 13-11 victory over Mount St. Mary's. Navy suffered its first setback of the season on Friday evening, being edged 10-9 by Saint Joseph's at home.
Offensively, Navy has tallied 99 points on 70 goals and 29 assists in five games this season.
The Mids are led by
Leelee Denton (Nashville, Tenn.),
Kasey Dietzel (Warrington, Pa.),
Gil Eby (Towson, Md.),
Lola Leone (Bay Shore, N.Y.), and
Reagan Roelofs (Apple Valley, Minn.). Denton paces the offense with a team-high 17 points on a team-best 13 goals. The sophomore has four hat tricks in five games on the year. Dietzel is second on the team with 13 points, including a team-high seven assists. Eby is third with seven goals and four assists for 11 points, while Leone (7g 3a) and Roelofs (6g 4a) round out the top five with 10 points apiece.
Dietzel leads the team with 24 draw controls, while Roelofs is second with 19 and
Emily Messinese (Manchester, Md.) has won 12 draws.
Defensively, the Mids picked up 97 ground balls, caused 36 turnovers, and tallied 42 saves.
Messinese has grabbed a team-high 10 ground balls, while
Grace Loughery (Perkasie, Pa.),
Christine Fiore (Darian, Conn.), and Eby have added nine apiece.
Erin Carson (New Albany, Ohio) leads the team with five caused turnovers, while Fiore, Loughery, Messinese, and
Alexis Bell (Johns Creek, Ga.) have added four apiece.
Jo Torres (Prince Frederick, Md.) leads the team with 40 of Navy's 42 saves in 286:43 minutes of action. Torres has earned four victories with a 49.4 save percentage. She is joined by
Emma Richardell (Bethesda, Md.) and
Anne Culicerto (Charlotte, N.C.) who have combined for two stops in 13 minutes of action.
Scouting the Opponent
No. 15 Drexel returns to action after taking a week off. The Dragons enter the week 3-0 with victories over Wagner (W, 18-7), No. 25 Penn State (W, 12-8), and Lafayette (W, 16-4).
In three games, Drexel has amassed 63 points on 46 goals and 17 assists. The Dragons have won 43 draw controls with 57 ground balls and 31 caused turnovers. Drexel's goalies have combined for 26 saves in three games with 19 goals allowed with a 57.8 save percentage and a 6.33 goals against average.
The Dragons won two Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) weekly awards last week after competing to a 2-0 record the prior week. The CAA recognized Karson Harris as the Co-Offensive Player of the Week and Belle McHugh as the Defensive Player of the Week. Drexel opened the week with a big 12-8 win over then-No. 25 Penn State on Wednesday, Feb. 16 and then followed suit with a dominant 16-4 over Lafayette on Sunday, Feb. 20.
All-Time Series
The game marks the second meeting between the two teams in women's lacrosse. Drexel is 1-0 in the series, winning the inaugural meeting 17-8 last season in Annapolis.
Navy senior
Erin Finley (Downingtown, Pa.) has a younger sister, Bridget Finley, who plays for Drexel. In addition, senior
Kasey Dietzel's sister Courtney Dietzel was a member of the Dragons from 2017 to 2021.
Navy is 3-3 all-time against current members of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). The Mids are 0-1 against Drexel; 1-0 against Towson; and 2-2 all-time against William & Mary.

The Navy women's lacrosse team was edged 10-9 by Saint Joseph's on Friday evening at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The game was a defensive battle with the two teams combining for 19 caused turnovers and both goalies registering double-digit saves.
Navy received a career-high performance by sophomore goalkeeper
Jo Torres (Prince Frederick, Md.), who tallied 14 saves in the loss. The double-digit save performance marked the fourth time in Torres' short career (14 games) that she tallied 10 or more stops. In addition, she tied a career high with four ground balls.
As a team, the Midshipmen caused 10 of the Hawks' 18 turnovers. Ten different Mids registered caused turnovers in the game. Navy picked up 23 ground balls with
Charlotte Ryan (Tully, N.Y.) leading the team with a career high five ground balls.
Gil Eby (Towson, Md.) joined Torres with four ground balls, while
Emily Messinese (Manchester, Md.) and
Christine Fiore (Darien, Conn.) added two GBs.
Ryan and Eby led the team with four points apiece. Ryan scored a career-high four goals, notching her second hat trick in the last two games. Eby scored a pair of goals, while adding a team-high two assists.
Leelee Denton (Nashville, Tenn.),

Reagan Roelofs (Apple Valley, Minn.), Fiore, and Leone added a helper apiece.
Messinese led the team with four draws controls, while Dietzel added three. Roelofs and Fiore each won two draws, while Eby picked up one.
For Saint Joseph's, Lauren Figura and Lisa Ross each scored three goals with an assist for four points apiece. Goalie Jorden Concordia earned the win finishing the game with 18 saves.
