ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy (16-6) men's tennis team lost a pair of matches on Saturday, losing 4-3 to Temple (5-3) in Annapolis and 6-1 to William & Mary (7-4) in Williamsburg, Va.
Each of the three doubles matches between the Mids and the Owls were close ones. Navy would record wins by the score of 6-4 at both the first and second flights to take the 1-0 lead.
Finn Garner (Jr., Arnold, Md.) and
Luke Garner (Fr., Arnold, Md.) combined for the victory at the former and
Jan Kjellberg (Sr., White Plains, N.Y.) and
Nicholas Nguyen (So., McLean, Va.) teamed for the win at the latter.
Finn Garner would go on to win a three-set match at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 6-0, 7-5, and
Luke Garner won a three-set decision at the No. 2 flight, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9). Temple won the remaining four singles flights in straight sets to rally for the victory.
"We received nice wins from our top-two doubles teams and singles players today," said Navy head coach
Chris Garner. "Temple has some savvy players. They see the court and understand the game very well."
The result was the fourth time this season the Mids have lost a match by the score of 4-3.
Navy had a great chance to win the doubles point against William & Mary. The Tribe won a 6-4 match at the No. 1 flight and in tiebreakers at both Nos. 2 and 3 doubles to earn the point.
William & Mary would win four straight-set singles matches to secure the overall victory. Navy's point was posted by
Jack Dabek (Sr., Dublin, Ohio), who recorded a 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) victory at No. 6 singles. Also going three sets in singles was
Jake Fishkin (Sr., Baltimore, Md.), who lost at the No. 3 flight, 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (10-6).
"The guys battled hard to push the doubles matches to tiebreakers," said Navy associate head coach
John Moreland. "William and Mary did a good job of putting the pressure on us and came away with the point. In singles, Jake and Jack played well in taking play to their opponents and getting into third sets."
Navy will play host to the District of Columbia at 10 a.m. Sunday and play at Old Dominion at 11 a.m.
