CHERRY HILL, N.J. – The Navy women's rowing team had a strong start to its day of racing at the 2022 Doc Hosea Invitational before Mother Nature forced the abrupt end of the competition mid-Sunday morning. With water conditions on the Cooper River worsening throughout the morning heat races, the tough decision was made to cancel the championship rounds of the two-part event. Should there have been championship finals, all five of Navy's boats would have been racing in grand finals after their performances in the qualifying heats.
Â
"All teams faced some challenging conditions out there today with strong winds and cold temperatures," remarked head coach
Joe Schlosberg. "We did what we wanted to in the heats by qualifying all five boats for the grand finals. Unfortunately, the conditions just continued getting worse.
Â
"The stewards and officials made the right call cancelling the finals. While I know that each boat would have loved to get out there and race again, all we can do is get back to work and continue to find speed."

One of 18 programs participating at the national regatta, Navy's first varsity eight crew was the first to see action on the Cooper River in heat number three of its classification. Racing against No. 13 Syracuse, Temple, Columbia, Cornell and George Washington, Navy completed the 2,000-meter course with a time of 6:41.03 that ranked second in the heat behind Syracuse, who clocked in at 6:29.56. Amongst the 18 boats that were competing at the invitational, the Mids' time was sixth fastest, 1.46 seconds shy of Northeastern's fifth-place time of 6:39.57.
Â
Racing against a similar field of Syracuse, Cornell, Tulsa, UMass and George Washington, the Orange and Mids once again finished one-two as Navy clocked in at 6:46.29. Syracuse's time of 6:31.75 was the fastest in the 2V8 classification. Overall, Navy was set to compete in the grand finals as the fourth seed. The Mids' time was 1.29 second behind the third-ranked Rutgers Scarlet Knights, who posted a 6:45.00.
Â
Navy's first varsity four crew was next up. Competing against Columbia, Syracuse, Cornell, Temple and George Washington, the Mids battled at the front of the field and recorded a second-place result of 7:36.75. Columbia took top-honors in the heat with a 7:31.24 time. Overall, Navy's time was third-fastest of the 18 V4 crews.
Â
The program's first heat victory came courtesy of its second varsity four crew, who sped by its opposition in heat number one with a final time of 7:48.99. Navy out-paced Columbia, Rutgers 'C', Notre Dame, Georgetown and George Washington as the Lions finished runner-up, 6.60 seconds back at 7:55.59. Should the grand finals have been held, the Mids would've been ranked fourth in that field, just 1.93 seconds back of Rutgers 'A' who won the third heat. Â
Â
The final action of the abridged competition came in the third varsity eight classification. Racing in the second heat of the event, Navy rolled through its competition and earned a 9.56-second margin of victory over Bucknell, 7:02.14 to 7:11.70. The Mids also defeated Drexel and Rutgers 'C' in this heat. Overall, Navy's time was second-fastest of the 13 third varsity eight crews in Cherry Hill.
Â
Navy will take next week off from varsity competition before heading to Overpeck Park, N.J. for a three-team meet. Columbia will play host to Navy and Northeastern on Saturday, April 9.
