ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's tennis team (18-3, 2-0 Patriot League) won five of the six singles matches over Bucknell (9-6, 0-1 Patriot League) in straight sets, along with sweeping the doubles competition, en route to a 6-1 victory over the Bison Sunday at the Tose Family Tennis Center.
Kacey Moore (Sr., Wellington, Fla.) led the way for the Midshipmen on Sunday, teaming up with
Jillian Taggart (Jr., Fair Oaks, Calif.) to earn victory at the No. 1 doubles competition, before securing a win in the No. 3 singles match.
Emily Tannenbaum (Fr., Commack, N.Y.) also totaled two wins on the afternoon, combining with
Casey Accola (Jr., Winter Garden, Fla.) for a victory at the No. 2 doubles, in addition to netting a straight-set victory in the No. 2 singles competition.
"Conference play always adds another element of pressure for both teams," said head coach
Keith Puryear. "The ladies did a great job of competing today. It was a busy week with three matches, but we handled it with aplomb. We must now shift our focus to prepping for Saturday's N-Star match."
The aforementioned pairing of Moore and Taggart got things started for the Midshipmen against Bucknell, downing the Bison duo of Daniela Bellini and Tyne Miller (6-0), prior to
Corinne Farid (So., Columbia, Mo.) and
Kate Lee (Fr., Concord, Calif.) netting a decision over Caroline Marcus and Kathryn Novak (6-1) at the No. 3 position to secure the doubles point for the Mids.
In the final doubles match of the competition, Accola and Tannenbaum defeated Anna Lajos and Madison Sebulsky (6-4) in the No.2 contest to secure the sweep of the circuit.
In singles,
Stella Ribaudo (So., Chicago, Ill.) quickly defeated Marcus in straight sets (6-1, 6-1) to extend the Navy advantage to 2-0, before Taggart was forced to retire in the No. 1 match against Bellini to bring the Midshipmen advantage to one point.
The Mids' lead would quickly go back to two points, 3-1, as Tannenbaum downed Miller (6-1, 6-0) in the No. 2 singles competition.
Katreina Corpuz (Sr., Ewa Beach, Hawai'i) followed Tannenbaum's decision by defeating Sebulsky in a straight-set decision (6-1, 6-0) at the No. 5 position to put the Midshipmen in what proved to be the match-clinching point for Navy over Bucknell.
Meghana Komarraju (Sr., Vienna, Va.) defeated Novak (6-4, 6-0) at the No. 4 singles to push the Navy advantage to four points, followed by Moore rounding out the contest for the Midshipmen with a straight-set victory (7-5, 6-1) in the No. 3 match over Lajos to cap off the 6-1 win.
With her victory at the No. 4 singles match, Komarraju joined Tannenbaum as the only two members of the Navy women's tennis team to win 20 matches this season. Additionally, Tannenbaum reached 40 combined wins this season between singles and doubles, the ninth-highest such total for a single season in program history.
