BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior team captain Sean Casey (Vienna, Va.) was named the 2022 Patriot League Men's Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year as announced by the conference on Wednesday morning. Casey highlighted six Navy track and field student-athletes who were named to the men's and women's Academic All-Patriot League teams.
 
Navy placed four men – Casey, Baynes Autrey (Mountain Brook, Ala.), Brett Brady (Phoenix, Ariz.), and Ashwin Briggs (Pickerington, Ohio) – and two women – Ellie Abraham (Brookings, S.D.), and Katie Halbert (Keller, Texas) – on the teams.
 
Ten men's track and field student-athletes were named to the academic All-League squad, while 11 women made the team, with one additional spot being awarded due to a tie in the voting. Navy combined to place six student-athletes on the two teams, while Army received four spots and Boston had three honorees. Bucknell (2), Colgate (2), Lehigh (2), American (1), and Loyola (1) all placed student-athletes on the men's and women's indoor track and field academic team.
 
Casey is a senior aerospace engineering major with a 4.00 GPA. He is a four-time Academic All-Patriot League selection, while also earning CoSIDA Academic All-America (First Team) and CoSIDA Academic All-District honors last season. In addition, Casey was named an USTFCCA Scholar-Athlete in 2021. On the track, the indoor team captain is a four-time Patriot League Champion, two-time Second Team All-Patriot League honoree, and two-time IC4A award winner.

Abraham is a sophomore history major. She was a member of the distance medley relay team that won the Patriot League title in the event, setting a Navy school record in the process. In addition, Abraham is a four-time Second Team All-Patriot League honoree, including taking second in the 800m and 4x800m relay this season. In the 4x800m relay, Abraham was part of the foursome that set the Navy school record in the event at the Patriot League Championship.
 
Autrey eared Academic All-Patriot League distinction for the first time in his career. He was a 2021 USTFCCCA Scholar-Athlete a season ago. This season, Autrey was named Patriot League Field Athlete of the Meet at the Indoor Championship, following a record-breaking performance in the heptathlon, winning five of the seven events. In addition, the history major is a 2021 IC4A All-East performer, while also earning Second Team All-Patriot League distinction.

For the first team in his indoor track and field career, Brady was named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team. The junior aerospace engineering major was the 2021 Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for cross country, while also being named to the All-Academic team. Brady earned points at the Patriot League Championship in the 3,000m and 5,000m runs.
 
Briggs is a four-time Patriot League Champion, while also making multiple appearances on the Patriot League All-Academic Team for cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field. The operations research major is a USTFCCCA Scholar-Athlete in track and field (2021). This season, the senior ran the anchor leg of Navy's winning 4x800m relay team, while also earning points at the Patriot League Championship in the distance medley relay and 1-mile run. Briggs is a two-time IC4A All-East performer, while also garnering second-team all-conference honors.

A senior captain and Navy school-record holder, Halbert secured a spot on the Patriot League All-Academic Team for the second time in her career. The mechanical engineering major was named an USTFCCCA Scholar Athlete last season. Halbert is a two-time First Team All-Patriot League performer, two-time Second Team All-Patriot League honoree, while earning ECAC All-East distinction twice. In her final indoor season, Halbert set school records in the 60m hurdles, long jump, and pentathlon.
 
Voting for the Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Men's and Women's Scholar-Athletes of the Year and Academic All-Patriot League Teams are conducted by the League men's and women's indoor track and field sports information directors.
 
The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
 
To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.
