RALEIGH, N.C. – Racing for the first time in two weeks, the Navy women's rowing team were able to compete in 10 separate contests on Friday in the first day of action at the 2022 Lake Wheeler Invitational. The Mids entered their first, second and third varsity eight crews in a pair of races, as well as their first and second varsity four squads. Navy's V4, 2V4 and 3V8 all collected wins over a talented field of opponents, including a pair of victories by the 3V8 crew.

Currently in the receiving votes section of this week's CRCA Top-20 Poll, Navy went up against No. 9 Penn, No. 15 Syracuse, R/V Clemson, R/V UCF, R/V Louisville, as well as Oklahoma, Temple and Bucknell over the two sessions of races.

Navy's first varsity eight posted times of 6:47.067 and 6:51.181 on Friday over their two 2,000-meter pieces. In session one, Navy went up against Louisville, Clemson, Oklahoma and Temple. The Cardinals were the class of the field with a victorious time of 6:39.424. The Mids challenged the Sooners in a tight battle for third place with Oklahoma holding on for a 1.97-second advantage at the finish line. Navy out-paced Temple by 2.913 seconds as the Owls posted a time of 6:49.980. In session two, Penn and Syracuse showcased high-level speed and went one-two at 6:30.588 and 6:30.774, respectively. In a preview of next month's Patriot League Championship, Bucknell edged Navy for fifth place down the stretch, 6:49.758 to 6:51.181.

The Mids' second varsity eight turned in times of 7:02.207 in session one and 6:55.602 in session two. Similar to the earlier V8 action, Louisville won the heat and Navy was in tight contest with Oklahoma. The Cardinals' winning time was 6:50.494, while the Mids held off the Sooners for a split second, 0.007-second margin to finish third overall. Later on in the afternoon, Navy shaved over six seconds off its original time and placed fifth in an extremely fast heat, so much so, that the Mids were within 1.8 seconds of the winning time in heat number two. In their respective heat, Navy and UCF were in a competitive matchup for fourth place that saw the Knights cross 1.404 seconds ahead of the Mids, 6:54.198 to 6:55.602.

Navy's third NCAA boat, the first varsity four crew, was strong in its opening race of the day and finished first in the field of five with a winning time of 7:29.982 besting Clemson (7:32.198) and Louisville (7:36.875). Oklahoma and Temple were off the pace and placed fourth and fifth. In the second session of V4 action, Navy ran into a fast heat again and posted the fifth-fastest time of its respective heat at 7:45.577, but ranked against all 16 teams was seventh overall. Navy and UCF were in a close contest for fourth place that saw the Knights hold on for the 1.923-second margin with a time of 7:43.654.

In lower boat action, Navy's 2V4 and 3V8 crews went two-for-two in the first session in dominant fashion as the Mids' second varsity four clocked in 9.632 seconds ahead of the field with a winning time of 7:40.248. Clemson was second at 7:49.880. The same alignment of Navy and Clemson going one-two occurred in the third varsity eight contest with the Mids coming in 6.649 seconds clear of the Tigers with a 7:10.060 to 7:16.709 decision.

Navy's 3V8 earned its second win of the day in session number two with a 5.520-second margin of victory over the grouping of Clemson, UCF, Syracuse and Bucknell. The Mids clocked in with a time of 7:04.928 versus a 7:10.448 for the second-place Tigers.

The Mids' 2V4 crew posted a 7:47.866 time in its second session to place third overall in their heat. In a fairly spaced-out final scoreboard, Syracuse clocked in at 7:37.909 ahead of UCF (7:43.323) and Navy. In the field of 13 2V4 boats, Navy's time was fifth overall.

Navy will be back in action on Saturday morning with the third and final session of racing at the Lake Wheeler Invitational. The Mids will first hit the waters of Lake Wheeler beginning at 9:24 a.m. with their third varsity eight crew.
