ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Racing on the Severn River for the final time in the spring 2022 season, the Navy lightweight team turned in a dominant performance on Saturday morning as the team defeated Harvard in all five races, including four winning margins of 10-plus seconds. Stronger than the Crimson in all four eight-man contests, as well as in a four-man race, Mids' dominance resulted in the Haines and Col. Paulovich Team Points Trophies coming home to Hubbard Hall.
Â
"The coaching staff was pleased with the attention and focus our squad committed to this week in preparation for our racing," remarked head coach
Shawn Bagnall. "We felt as though there was a healthy approach to the work required to race a storied, talented program like Harvard. We are grateful for the opportunity to race our traditional cup racing schedule this spring, and anytime you can get a win in our league, that is a great day."Â
Â
Starting off with the Haines Trophy contest for the first varsity eight crews, Navy led from start-to-finish over Harvard and Delaware. Strong from the opening sprint, the Mids cruised down the 2,000-meter stretch of the Severn and won by 11.7 seconds with a final decision of 6:09.8 to 6:21.5 over the Crimson. Racing as a guest crew, the Blue Hens clocked in over seven seconds back at 6:28.8.
Â
The action then moved to a fourth/fifth varsity eight race between Navy and Harvard. The Mids' 4V8 crew breezed past the Crimson's fourth boat by 11.3 seconds with decisive 6:30.0 to 6:41.3 margin of victory. Navy's fifth varsity also raced in this event and finished in a dead heat with Harvard with an identical 6:41.3 time.
Â
Delaware re-entered the competition on the ensuing race, the first varsity four event. The fans watching along the Naval Academy's Seawall saw Navy dominate once again and post its largest margin of victory on the day as the Mids recorded a winning time of 7:32.9, 16.5 seconds ahead of the Blue Hens, who posted a time of 7:49.4. Harvard was well off the pace with a final time of 8:00.8.
Â
One-on-one tilts between Navy and Harvard closed out the morning of action and played out with the Mids winning two more times. In the second varsity eight contest, Navy rolled to a 12.8-second margin of victory, 6:22.0 to 6:34.8 before holding on for a tighter 6:32.8 to 6:39.0 win in the third varsity eight race.
Â
"The youth of our team handled the challenging crosswind well as the morning moved along, and it was awesome to bring home the Col. Paulovich (USMC, ret) Team Points Trophy," said Bagnall in closing. "Our program takes a ton of pride in having the ability to be competitive for all the team points trophies on our schedule, and this annual challenge with Harvard is no different. Our attention turns quickly to a well-coached UPenn team, and we know that we need to bring our best from The Yard to Philadelphia next Saturday.Â
Â
"Our thanks to the many volunteers that helped to make this a successful day, and one that our 1/C will cherish as their last home race at Navy. We were glad to close their home racing careers with a final victory on the Severn, and our gratitude to VADM Buck for watching these dedicated athletes do what they love."
Â
Navy will conclude its regular season next Saturday, April 30 in Philadelphia versus Penn.
