RALEIGH, N.C. – The Navy women's rowing team wrapped up its final regular season event of the year with action on Saturday morning at the 2022 Lake Wheeler Invitational. After racing twice on Friday afternoon, the Mids trekked down the waters of Lake Wheeler one more time versus a field of talented programs that could very well be meeting again at the NCAA Championship in late May. Navy's second varsity four and third varsity eight crews led the way as both squads finished runner-up in their respective races.
Â
"We had a great opportunity to line up against 15 other teams, including three ranked in the top-15 and five others receiving votes," remarked head coach
Joe Schlosberg. "We had some really great races this weekend, especially in both fours and the 3V8.
Â
"The invite gave us three chances to come down the course, try some things, learn and adjust. We did just that. This weekend allowed us to do those things against some really good, competitive teams."
Â
Getting on the water first this morning, Navy's third varsity eight crew was matched up in a fast heat along Duke, Clemson, Oklahoma, Miami and Bucknell. The host Blue Devils paced the entire field and won with a time of 7:04.021. The Mids crossed the finish line in second place at 7:12.980, 6.8 seconds ahead of the third-place Tigers, who posted a 7:19.780 time. Navy's speed would've placed them over six seconds ahead of UCF, who won heat number one at 7:19.502.
Â
The Mids' lower boats continued with strong performances as Navy's second varsity four crew found itself in another one-on-one bout with Duke at the front of the field. At the conclusion of 2,000-meter contest, the Blue Devils clocked with a 7:41.175 result versus a 7:47.342 time for the Mids. Penn finished in third over seven seconds behind Navy at 7:55.115. Amongst all 14 boats in the 3V8 competition, the Mids' time stood fourth overall.
Â
Navy's first varsity four crew made it three boats to garner top-three results on Saturday as they finished in a close sprint down the stretch with Duke. Penn was the ultimate winner in the heat at 7:32.420, while Duke and Navy came in second and third overall with times of 7:38.132 and 7:40.485, respectively. In a potential preview of next month's Patriot League Championship varsity four race, Navy finished 9.407 seconds ahead of Boston University, who posted a 7:49.892 time.
Â
The Mids' second varsity eight boat was the second-to-last crew to compete under the Navy banner at Lake Wheeler this weekend. In the third heat of the 2V8 classification, the Mids came in fifth place with a time of 7:00.482. Navy was barely edged out of fourth place by Temple's 6:59.162.
Â
In the final contest of the entire two-day, 45-race regatta, Navy's first varsity eight posted a time of 6:49.932 to finish fourth in the six-team heat. Another Navy-Boston University matchup played out in this race and in this situation, the Terriers pulled away from the Mids for a 3.856-second advantage as BU placed third at 6:46.076.
"We have some work to do as we head into the Patriot League Championship, but we will build off this weekend and see what we can improve upon in these next few weeks of training," concluded Schlosberg.
Navy will step away from competition for three weeks before taking aim at the program's seventh straight Patriot League Championship. The league-ending championship is scheduled for Friday, May 13 in Cherry Hill, N.J.
