PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The No. 3 Navy lightweight rowing team closed its 2022 regular season with an emphatic three-race sweep of No. 6 Penn on Saturday morning in Philadelphia. Racing on a 2,000-meter stretch of the Schuylkill River, the Mids dominated the host Quakers in a three-for-three showing with a trio of victories by four or more seconds. Navy's success resulted in the Mids bringing the Callow Cup and the 1919 Team Points Trophy back to Hubbard Hall.

The closest race of the day between Navy and Penn's second varsity eight led off the morning of action. The Mids' succeeded in starting the day off with a win as they crossed the finish line 4.6 seconds ahead of the Quakers. The final times were 5:47.6 and 5:52.2, respectively.

The Callow Cup was on the line in the ensuing race as the first varsities hit the water. In control for most of the 2,000 meters, Navy recorded as 7.1-second margin of victory, 5:33.2 to 5:40.3 over Penn.

A pair of Midshipmen crews competed in the final race of the day, the third varsity eight contest. Navy's depth was no match for Penn as the Mids' third varsity and fourth varsity boats went one-two with times of 5:48.0 and 5:54.9, respectively. Penn's third varsity was 15.9 seconds off the pace of Navy's fourth crew with a final time of 6:10.8.
"Each year coming into this weekend we know that Penn is going to require us to race to our highest level," remarked head coach
Shawn Bagnall. "Today was no exception. We were appreciative of the opportunity to line up with another quality team in our league. There are certainly things that we will need to improve on in the next two weeks, as we move into academic finals and ready ourselves for the Eastern Sprints. But today, we pause to reflect on the last cup race for our commissioning Firsties, and are grateful for their leadership the past four years. I know they are motivated to find as much speed as possible in the coming weeks. We look forward to executing their vision, and enjoying the work ahead."Â
Â
Saturday's action closed out Navy's regular season with a 6-1 record. The Mids will now turn their attention to postseason competitions over the next five weeks. First up will be the Eastern Sprints in Worcester, Mass. on Sunday, May 15 followed by the IRA National Championships, June 3-5 in West Windsor, N.J.
