Heavyweight Crew to Host Occoquan Collegiate Invitational

Nine teams to compete at Sandy Run Regional Park

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The No. 12 Navy heavyweight rowing team (0-1) will take part in a multi-team, two-session competition on Sunday at the Occoquan Collegiate Invitational hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy. After a morning of duel racing against No. 21 Holy Cross and No. 16 Drexel for Navy, all teams will advance to the afternoon finals. The morning action is set to begin at 10 a.m. and run through 11:50 before the finals are slated to commence at 1:30 p.m. and conclude an hour later. The event will be held at the Sandy Run Regional Park in Fairfax Station, Virginia.

The Mids' official schedule on Saturday will consist of a varsity eight race against Holy Cross at 10 a.m., a second varsity eight race against the Crusaders at 10:40 a.m. before switching gears and taking on Drexel in a third varsity eight bout at 11:20 a.m. Navy's final two morning contests will be a fourth varsity race versus both Drexel and Holy Cross at 11:40 a.m. and a fifth varsity head-to-head with Drexel. This schedule will be mirrored by three other pods of teams. The afternoon session will consist of the four race winners in each class taking part in a grand final, while the five runner-up or third place finishers will race in a petite final. The afternoon races begin with the petite final of the first varsity eight at 1:30 p.m. followed by the grand final at 1:40 p.m. All of the finals will go off in 10-minute increments.

Spectators are asked to park in Lots C and D ONLY. The path to the finish line grandstand area is found at the back of Lot C.

Last Time Out - April 2 vs. Princeton
Navy opened the home portion of its 2022 season with a hard-fought five-race meet against Princeton on Saturday, April 2. In a matchup of two teams ranked inside the top-15, the No. 8 Tigers took four of the five the contests versus the No. 12 Mids on the Severn River, including slim 0.8-second margin of victory in the first varsity eight competition for the Navy-Princeton Cup. Navy's fifth varsity eight crew earned the program's lone win on Saturday in the final race of the day.

In the trophy race with the finish line in sight for both first varsity crews, the Mids made a late charge and drew within three seats before a final push at the line closed it to a 0.9-second margin. Princeton held on for the 5:49.0 to 5:49.9 victory.
