DALLAS, Texas – Navy baseball's
Landon Kruer (Sellersburg, Ind.) was selected to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Freshman All-America Team as a first-team honoree, the organization announced Monday. The right-handed pitcher was chosen as one of the top-34 first-year players in America by the NCBWA that is open to writers, broadcasters and publicists of the sport.
Monday's accolade is the second in less than a week for Kruer, as he was named a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American on Wednesday, June 8. Additionally, Kruer becomes the first player in team history to be named an NCBWA Freshman All-America first-team selection.
The standout freshman becomes the first Navy baseball player since Noah Song to be named to the NCBWA Freshman All-America team, along with joining Song as the only athletes in program history to be named to multiple Freshman All-America teams in the same year.
The NCBWA breaks up its Freshman All-America team into two 17-player squads, a first team and a second team, respectively. Kruer is one of three relief pitchers named to the first team, joining UCLA's Alonzo Tredwell and Arkansas' Brady Tygart.
In his rookie campaign, Kruer appeared in 16 games out of the bullpen as Navy's closer. He posted a 2-1 record with a 1.89 ERA and a Patriot League best seven saves. The rookie tallied 17 strikeouts and yielded just a .182 batting average against over 19 innings pitched.
Kruer did not allow a hit in eight of his 16 appearances. He earned a two-inning save against Bucknell (3/20), during which he held the Bison hitless and struck out a season-high three batters.
His seven saves tied for the fifth most for a single season in team history, while ending 2022 tied for eighth on the Mids' career saves list.
