ANNAPOLIS, Md. – A stellar opening weekend to the 2022-23 season on the courts has earned Navy women's tennis sophomore
Emily Tannenbaum honors as the Naval Academy Athletic Association (NAAA) Athlete of the Week, presented by Northrop Grumman.
Â
The reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Year, Tannenbaum finished the first weekend of the fall season with a pair of tournament crowns, as the sophomore won both the top doubles draw and the top singles draw at the Bill and Sandra Moore Invitational with a combined 6-0 record.
Â
Competing at home in the friendly confines of the Brigade Sports Complex, Tannenbaum and Midshipman teammate
Casey Accola drew Binghamton's Natalia Aruj and Loren Cuomo in the doubles "A" flight quarterfinals, winning 6-4 to set up a meeting with Goerge Mason's Taylor Garcia and Paife La on Saturday. The Navy duo then scored a 6-3 win over the Patriots' pairing to reach the final, where they downed Lehigh's Avery Hopkey and Hamsa Javagal with a 6-3 victory.
Â
In the "A" singles draw, Tannenbaum claimed the crown by beating St. Bonaventure's Alexandra Jansson (6-2, 6-2) in the quarterfinals, winning a 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 semifinal match against her teammate
Stella Ribaudo, and then drawing her doubles partner, Accola, in the final, where Tannenbaum won after Accola injury retired during the match.
Â
Tannenbaum and Ribaudo return to action this week at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic (Sept. 16-18), while the rest of the Navy women's tennis team heads to the Liberty Hidden Duals (Sept. 17-18).
