Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Finn Garner Wins Singles Flight at Joe Hunt Invite

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Finn Garner (Sr., Arnold, Md.) compiled a 4-0 record to win his singles flight and highlight the efforts of the Navy men's tennis team at the season-opening Joe Hunt Invitational this weekend in Annapolis.

"It is always great to start the season by playing host to the Joe Hunt Invitational," said Navy head coach Chris Garner.  "There is a lot of tennis played in a very small window."

Garner won each of his three group matches (flights were divided into two four-player groups) to advance to the flight final.  He would record a 6-2, 6-2 victory over George Mason's Rithik Sardana Sunday to win the flight title.

"Finn was able to claw his way back to force and win some third sets in his group matches," said Garner.

Also winning singles groups were Navy's Herrick Legaspi (Fr., Sacramento, Calif.), J.J. Etterbeek (Fr., Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and Christian Pumpelly (Sr., Atlanta, Ga.), each of whom compiled 3-0 records within the round-robin group portion of the draw.  Legaspi lost in three sets, 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 1-0 (12-10), to Fairleigh Dickinson's Justas Trainauskas, Etterbeek dropped a 6-3, 6-0 match to Fairleigh Dickinson's Arjun Sriram and Pumpelly fell, 7-5, 6-0, to George Mason's Alvaro Pedraza in the respective flight finals.

"Herrick is finding his groove and had match point to win his flight today," said Garner, "but his opponent hit an incredible passing shot while on the run to even the third-set tiebreaker.  J.J. won three solid singles matches before running into a buzzsaw today in the final."

Winning three of four singles matches on the weekend was Aniketh Ayinala (Fr., Charlotte, N.C.) to place second in his group and win his final against the second-place finisher from the other half of the group within his flight.

"Aniketh rebounded well from a nail-biting defeat in his first match to win his remaining three matches in impressive fashion," said Garner.

Navy's most successful doubles team during the group portion of the tournament was the tandem of Garner and Legaspi.  The pairing posted a 2-1 record with its lone loss coming by the score of 7-5.

In addition to Navy playing host to the Joe Hunt Invitational, Luke Garner (So., Arnold, Md.) and Sasha Panyan (Jr., Lutherville, Md.) competed in the Milwaukee Tennis Classic this weekend.  The pair won its first round doubles match over Cleveland State's Mikeal Erier and Max Mareschal-Hay, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals.  There, the duo would lose a 6-2 decision to Wisconsin's Jason Hildebrandt and Jared Pratt.

Garner would also win his first-round singles match as he recorded a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Marquette's Ian Brady.  Garner lost in the second round (Sweet 16), 6-3, 6-1, to VCU's Rayane Stable.  After losing his first-round main draw singles match, Panyan won a three-set decision over Marquette's Rami Sheetz, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-3), in the first round of the consolation draw before he lost in straight sets in the second round.

Navy's fall season continues this weekend when the Mids take part in the Western Michigan Invite.
