ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team had a relatively light weekend of competition on Saturday and Sunday, with just two home events on the slate in Annapolis.
Â
Both days featured light wind in the morning that forced delays, followed by building winds in the afternoon that topped out at 10-15 knots.Â
Â
The Faye Bennet MAISA Women's Singlehanded Championship featured a field of 17 boats from around the conference, including two Midshipmen. Navy's sailors posted some strong races but struggled to keep up in the heavier winds, as the duo were two of the smallest sailors in the field. In the end, junior
Aubin Hattendorf wound up 10th overall while sophomore
Izzy Fadullon finished 12th.
Â
The Chesapeake Invitational was raced on the same course as the Faye Bennet Regatta, with six teams from around the Chesapeake Bay competing with three boats each in a combined division format. Navy came out of the gate strong and opened up an early lead before inconsistent sailing later in the day had the team drop to third by the end of Saturday. The team once again came out strong on Sunday, quickly overcoming St. Mary's and Georgetown to claim the overall victory.
Â
In the combined division, senior
Gavin McJones and freshman Ellie Alex finished first overall. Behind them in second place were junior
Madeline Smith, sophomore
Ryan Wahba and freshman Nathan Smith, while the crew of seniors
Colin MacGillivray and
Caden Scheiblauer and freshman Margo Cicero placed 12th.
Â
The Navy intercollegiate sailing team continues its season this upcoming weekend at the Intrepid MAISA Match Race in Kings Point, N.Y., the Oyster Bowl in St. Mary's City, Md., and the Webb/Woollum Regatta in Newport News, Va.
