ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy rifle team (2-1) totaled 4,665 points during its season-opening match, falling to the defending air rifle national champion TCU (1-0) – who scored 4,758 points – but defeating both the VMI (0-1) men's team (4,546 points) and women's team (4,389) on Saturday at the
Bancroft Hall Rifle Range.
"We had a bit of a rough match today," head coach
Mike Anti. "I know we are capable of doing much better and will work on doing that next week. Even though we might not have shot to our potential, we did have a number of very good individual performances. The match did reveal some areas we can work on in preparation for next week. Despite our total team score, I am still very proud of our team. They worked on every shot and never gave up. I am confident in our abilities and look forward to display that in future competitions."
The Midshipmen totaled 2,311 points in smallbore along with score of 2,354 points in air rifle for an aggregate score of 4,665, finishing 93 points behind the first-place Horned Frogs.
Marleigh Duncan (Wake Forest, N.C.) finished in the top-10 among individual performers in both the smallbore and the air rifle. The sophomore tallied 588 points in smallbore to finish fourth in the discipline. Duncan registered 594 points in air rifle to claim seventh. Her aggregate score of 1,182 was the fourth-best individual performance of the day and tops by the Midshipmen.
Competing in his first match,
Parker Haydin (Joshua, Texas) compiled a 1,166 combined score on 588 air rifle and 578 smallbore points.
Stephanie Milvain (Matthews, N.C.) tallied 1,160 total points. The sophomore posted a score of 583 in air rifle, while notching a performance of 577 in smallbore.
Deonte Hayes (Fort Mills, S.C.) was designated as a starter in air rifle, posting a score of 585 to earn points for the team. In smallbore, Hayes recorded a score of 563.
Clarissa Layland (Granbury, Texas) registered scores of 587 in air rifle and 555 in smallbore to finish with a total score of 1,142.
Senior team captain
Mason MacKenzie (Henderson, Md.) tallied 1,141 aggregate points. He was designated as a starter in smallbore, posting a total of 568 points. MacKenzie added a score of 573 in air rifle.
TCU had nine shooters finish in the top-10, with Julie Johannessen finishing as the individual winner with an aggregate score of 1,194. In addition, she was the top finisher in smallbore (595 points) and air rifle (599).
The Horned Frogs finished with a score of 2,365 in smallbore along with totaling 2,393 points in air rifle to finish first in the team standings with 4,758 total points. VMI's men team finished third with 4,546 points while the Keydets' women's team shoot at the event, recording 4,389 points.
Navy returns to action Sunday, October 2 as it hosts fellow GARC member Memphis. The match is set to get underway at 9:00 a.m.
