Rifle Edged in Tri-Match by Ole Miss and Akron

Navy tallied 4,684 total points in the first match since the holiday break.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy rifle team (8-6, 2-4 in the GARC) was edged by Ole Miss (6-2, 4-2) and Akron (8-5, 5-2) on Saturday in a tri-match at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range. The Midshipmen tallied 4,684 total points, while the Rebels finished with a match-high 4,700 points and the Zips were three points ahead of the Mids with 4,687 points.
 
Ole Miss' Lea Horvath posted a match-best aggregate score of 1,185 to lead all scorers, while also winning the smallbore with an individual-best score on the day of 594. Horvath's teammate Kristen Derting was second with a combined score of 1,183, winning the air rifle (597) and placing third in the smallbore. Navy's Marleigh Duncan (Wake Forest, N.C.) and Parker Haydin (Joshua, Texas) were the top two finishers on the day for the Midshipmen. Duncan was third overall with an aggregate tally of 1,177, finishing one point head of Haydin (1,176). Akron's top performer of the day Gavin Perkowski rounded out the top five scoring with a combined performance of 1,175.
 
Haydin was second overall in the smallbore, posting a score of 587, but dipped a bit in the air rifle, notching a performance of 589 points to finish 13th in the event. Duncan was consistent, finishing fourth in both the smallbore (584) and air rifle (593) disciplines.
 
Deonte Hayes (Fort Mills, S.C.) and Stephanie Milvain (Matthews, N.C.) slip starting duties on the day. Hayes posted a career high 591 points in the air rifle en route to a career best 1,165 aggregate points. Milvain was third on the team with 1,167 points combined, earning the starting role in the smallbore (581).
 
Clarissa Layland (Granbury, Texas) and Joshua Potts (Ephrata, Pa.) each earned spots in the starting lineup. Layland posted a score of 569 in the smallbore, while finishing with 590 points in air rifle for an aggregate score of 1,159. Potts finished the day with 568 points in smallbore with 579 in air rifle for a combined tally of 1,147.
 
Catherine Dely (Fort Wayne, Ind.) edged older brother Mark Dely (Fort Wayne, Ind.), 1,137 to 1,133. C.Dely finished with 556 in smallbore and 581 in air rifle, while M.Dely notched a 564 and 569, respectively. Devin Uhrich (Camp Hill, Pa.) posted scores of 550 (SB) and 578 (AR) for 1,128 total points, while Grace Shepard (Beecher, Ill.) notched performances of 551 (SB) and 571 (AR) to register a career-high 1,122 points aggregate. Isabelle Zantow (St. Simons Island, Ga.) and Mason MacKenzie (Henderson, Md.) rounded out the scoring for Navy. Zantow recorded a total score of 1,113 (550 SB, 563 AR), while MacKenzie finished the day with 1,069 points (569 SB, 500 AR).
 
Navy is set to return to action Saturday, Jan. 28 as it travels to Morgantown, W.Va. to take on West Virginia. The match is slated to begin at 9:00 a.m.
