The 26th-ranked Navy squash team (14-9) picked up its 14th win of the 2022-23 campaign by earning a 7-2 victory on the road against #30 Haverford (5-6) Thursday evening at the GIAC Squash Courts in Haverford, Pa. The Midshipmen are now 23-0 against the Fords all-time.
Match Highlights
• Though Navy technically began the match down 1-0 due to its default at #9 (injury), the Mids rattled off four-consecutive wins to begin the evening.
• Earning Navy's first win of the night was
Lucas Spiro (So / Buffalo, N.Y.), who opened with an 11-1 victory over junior Peter Lehv at the #4 position en route to a 3-0 sweep.
• One of three senior members on the team,
Tommy Rankin (Atlanta, Ga.) picked up a 3-1 win over Haverford rookie Kai Schinaman at #5. Rankin picked up an 11-5 win in the opening game, but Schinaman tied the match by outlasting Rankin in the second, 11-9. Rankin, however, bounced back to cruise to back-to-back 11-3 and 11-1 wins to earn the victory.
•
Ben Balser (Sr / Brooklyn, N.Y.) claimed a 3-1 victory over Haverford senior John Collins at the #7 position. Like Rankin, Balser took the opening game of his match (11-5), but Collins knotted the match with a 13-11 win in the second. Balser went on to win games three (11-2) and four (11-7) to pick up the win.
•
Matt Wang (So / Malvern, Pa.) made it four in a row for the Mids, earning a gritty win at #1 against senior Quinton Ayres Crawford. Wang matched his win total from a year ago (18) by earning three-straight games by an 11-9 count.
• Navy's streak of wins was momentarily derailed with a 3-0 loss at #8 before
Henry Sparkman (Jr / Darien, Conn.) turned the momentum back in favor of the Mids. Sparkman swept his foe, Aaryaman Jaising, in three games (11-6, 11-7, 11-4) at #3 to clinch the team win for Navy.
• A native of Haverford, Pa.,
Alexander Orr (Fr) shook off the nerves of playing in front of his hometown crowd to earn his 18th win of the season. Orr swept third-year player Benjamin Schiltz in three games (11-7, 11-4, 11-9) at #6 to put the Mids up 6-2.
• Team captain
Millen Randell (Sr / Chicago, Ill.) capped off the action with a 3-0 win of his own at #2. Randell earned an 11-3, 11-2, 11-5 victory over sophomore Noah Tunis and moved a step closer to the 50-win milestone (41-35).
