Mids Ready For Final Two Home Matchups Of The Season Versus Hofstra and Binghamton

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy wrestling team (1-5, 0-1) competes in Annapolis for the final time this season when the team hosts Hofstra (2-3, 1-3) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Dahlgren Hall and then battles Binghamton (4-9, 3-2) on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall for senior day.

Notes For Traveling Fans
• Saturday's dual versus Hofstra will take place in Dahlgren Hall and admission is free. Sunday's dual versus Binghamton will be in Alumni Hall and admission will be 10 dollars for adults and five dollars for youth. 
• Vehicular access to the Naval Academy is limited to those drivers with a Department of Defense identification card. 
• All other visitors may park outside of the Naval Academy grounds and walk through the security gates at Gate 1 or they may take the complimentary shuttles.
• The shuttles will run from Noon to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. The shuttles will pick up spectators at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium (550 Taylor Avenue, 
Annapolis, Md., 21401). 
• Enter the blue/west parking lot through gate 5 off of Taylor Avenue. 
• The cost of parking is 10 dollars per vehicle.
• Visitors 18 years and older must present a government-issued identification card (driver's license/ passport) to gain access to the Academy grounds, while visitors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Navy Notes
• Navy is 1-5 in duals this season. The Mids defeated Kent State 27-21 on Jan. 14 at the Virginia 
Duals for its first victory of the season.
• Three of Navy's five losses have come against ranked opponents. Navy fell to 23rd-ranked 
Maryland (18-15), 19th-ranked South Dakota State (31-6) and 19th-ranked Lehigh (21-16). Navy also lost to Oklahoma (28-12) who also received votes in the latest NWCA Div. I Wrestling Coaches Top 25 Poll. 
• Head coach Cary Kolat has used a different lineup in all six duals this season. Only Josh Koderhandt (141-pounds) and Sammy Starr (174-pounds) have competed in all six matchups.
• Koderhandt has faced a ranked wrestler in nine of his last 13 matches. He's 4-6 against ranked 
opponents this season and leads Navy's roster with 10 career wins over nationally ranked opponents. 
• Starr can reach 30 career victories with two wins this weekend. The sophomore is currently 28-19 in his career with a 4-4 dual record.
Andrew Cerniglia (157-pounds) defeated his first ranked wrestler of the season in Navy's last dual versus Lehigh. He defeated 26th-ranked Max Brignola by a 4-1 decision in his first match since Dec. 29. Cerniglia has won seven of his 17 career matches against a nationally ranked wrestler. 
• Freshman Brendan Ferretti (133-pounds) was ranked nationally at 31st in InterMat's most recent individual rankings. Since his return from injury at the Soldier Salute on Dec. 29, Ferretti has gone 12-3, which included an individual championship at the Franklin & Marshall Open. He's Navy's only freshman to be ranked nationally this season and currently is tied with Jacob Lucas (197-pounds) for the most victories amongst Navy's freshmen class with 15.
Grady Griess (285-pounds) won his 23rd countable victory last Saturday and 26th overall this 
season. Navy's heavyweight currently leads the nation in wins this season. Griess took his third match over a ranked opponent this season with a 9-1 major decision win over 31st-ranked Nathan Taylor to improve to 3-4 against nationally ranked foes during the 2022-23 campaign. 
• Navy will honor seniors Jacob Koser (197-pounds), Val Park (165-pounds), Hunter Johns (184-pounds), Paul Warner (197-pounds) and Henry Hague (165-pounds), as well as team manager Clay Keller on Sunday prior to its dual versus Binghamton. The ceremony will begin at 1:50 p.m.

Scouting Hofstra
• Hofstra is coming off a dual on Thursday versus Binghamton but fell in the matchup 27-8 to drop to 2-3 overall and 1-3 versus EIWA teams. 
• The Pride opened their dual season on Dec. 22 with a 21-16 loss to American and then lost 18-17 to Bucknell on Jan. 9. 
• Hofstra earned wins in their next two duals, defeating Buffalo 23-9 and Franklin & Marshall 21-12.
• Two wrestlers in Hofstra's projected lineup are currently ranked in the InterMat national rankings. 
• Jacob Ferreira (184-pounds) is their top-ranked wrestler at #24. He owns a 15-7 overall record and a 3-2 dual record but is 0-6 against ranked opponents this season. 
• Trey Rogers (197-pounds) comes in ranked 30th in the nation with a 11-3 overall record and a 4-0 dual record. Rogers and Koser are expected to meet on the mat for the fourth time on Saturday. 
Koser is 3-0 against Rogers and defeated him earlier in the year by a 6-0 decision at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. The two have a combined 215 matches wrestled and 140 wins. 
• Heavyweight Zachary Knighton-Ward is another threat on Hofstra's roster. He has been ranked as high as 26th nationally this season and owns a 12-9 overall record and a 3-2 dual record. 
Knighton-Ward got the best of Griess in last year's match with a 4-2 decision. 

Navy vs. Hofstra Series
• Navy is undefeated against Hofstra, leading the all-time series 7-0. 
• Coach Kolat has won both matchups versus Hofstra, winning one dual with Campbell and one with Navy.
• Navy won the first matchup in Hempstead, N.Y., 19-13 on Jan. 28, 1961.
• The two squads last met in Annapolis in 2019, which was a 30-12 win for Navy. 
• Last year's matchup took place in Hempstead and Navy dominated the dual 35-6.
• Saturday's dual will be the third matchup between the two teams in the last five years. Prior to their meeting in 2019, the two programs hadn't seen each other since 1974. 
• Hofstra is one of three current EIWA members and one of 11 schools Navy hasn't suffered a loss to with at least five matchups. Navy is yet to lose to Brown (8-0), Harvard (9-0-1), Delaware Valley (6-0), East Stroudsburg (15-0), George Mason (12-0), Gettysburg (5-0), Southern Illinois (5-0), Stanford 
(5-0), Virginia Tech (15-0) and Washington & Lee (8-0-1).

Scouting Binghamton
• The Bearcats began the year with a pair of close losses to ranked foes, dropping duals to 18th-ranked North Dakota State (18-13) and 11th-ranked Minnesota (19-15). 
• Binghamton earned its first win over Buffalo (22-9) before losing to Michigan State (29-6) and 
Indiana (25-16) at the Garden State Grapple. 
• The squad won its second dual over Long Island (41-6) but then went on a four-dual losing streak, losing to sixth-ranked N.C. State (36-3), 24th-ranked Appalachian State (29-10), Drexel (19-12) and 20th-ranked Lehigh (26-12). 
• The Bearcats finally snapped their losing skid with a 19-13 win over Harvard before Thursday's win over Hofstra.
• Three wrestlers in Binghamton's projected lineup are nationally ranked.
• Cory Day (285-pounds) has the highest ranking on the roster at 21st with a 14-5 overall record and a 10-3 dual record. 
• Binghamton is expected to once again be without its normal 197-pound starter Lou DePrez. DePrez hasn't wrestled since he suffered an injury at the Southern Scuffle back on Jan. 2. He was 10-2 
overall and 6-1 in duals prior to his injury and currently owns a 134-26 career overall record and a 43-4 career dual record.
• Park is expected to face 33rd-ranked Brevin Cassella for the fourth time in his career on Sunday. Park is yet to defeat Cassella, dropping all three previous contests by narrow margins (3-2, 4-1, 3-1). 
• Cerniglia looks to stay perfect in his career against Bearcat wrestlers, currently owning a 4-0 record. He's expected to battle against Conner Decker for the second time this season on Sunday. Cerniglia defeated Decker by a 21-5 (5:32) tech fall at the Bearcat Open en route to claiming the 157-pound title at the tournament. 

Navy vs. Binghamton Series
• Although Binghamton has been an EIWA member since 2013, it wasn't until last season they matched up with Navy for the first time.
• The Mids fell in the first-ever dual 19-16 in Vestal, N.Y.
• Binghamton, Long Island and Sacred Heart are the only current EIWA members Navy hasn't competed against at least five times in its history.
