ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team had another busy weekend with three road competitions, posting a pair of top-3 finishes.
Â
Up in New Haven, Conn., was the second round of the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship series, where Navy was among the top 18 teams competing in the Women's ACC finals at Yale. Light wind and cold rain made for an abbreviated first day of competition as only four races were completed per division, with the Midshipmen posting some very good races to go along with some weaker finishes on the first day, finding themselves in the back half of the field heading into Sunday. The second day had much better breeze to start and Navy found its groove, moving up into the top half of the field within the first two sets, but a wind shift to the left made the conditions much more volatile and all teams had a hard time finding consistency at the end of the day. Navy wound up ninth overall with junior
Evie Blauvelt and senior
Madeline Smith finishing fourth in the "A" division while seniors
Aubin Hattendorf and
Julia Christie, sophomore
Ava Farley and freshman
Josie Sherry came in 18th in the "B" division.Â
Â
The main interconference regatta of the weekend was the Nevin's Trophy in Kings Point, N.Y., as the wind was even worse at the Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday than in New Haven and only two races were completed per division, but the 18-team fleet found better winds on Sunday and experienced great racing in the final day of the event. The Mids got off to a hot start on Sunday, with the team finishing third overall, as seniors
Trenton Shaw and
Hunter Anderson and sophomore
Darby Graham finished ninth in the "A" division while freshmen
Henry Allgeier and
George Carty and sophomore Ella Niehoff claimed first in the "B" division.
Â
Navy also had two teams competing in the 16-team Washington College Fall Fleet Regatta in Chestertown, Md. Like the other events of the weekend, light wind and rain plagued the day on Saturday but much stronger wind on Sunday provided for great racing. One of Navy's teams traded the overall lead back and forth all weekend with St. Mary's, but a disqualification in the "A" division and a double-digit finish in the "B" division late in the event forced the top Navy team to settle for second overall. Freshmen
Teddy Martin and
Mary Dwyer finished as the runners-up in the "A" division while fellow freshmen
Spencer Dominguez and
Fiona Cullen were third in the "B" division. Navy's other team finished fifth overall, with sophomores
Margo Cicero and
Alex Brenia coming in third in the "A" division and freshmen
Kate Zurinskas and
Eva Ottenbreit taking fifth in division "B".
Â
Navy continues its fall slate on Oct. 21-22 with the Open Atlantic Coast Championships in St. Mary's City, Md., the Tom Curtis Regatta in Washington, D.C. and the Yale Women's Regatta in New Haven, Conn.
