ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy offshore sailing team finished up the McMillan Cup on Sunday, as the Midshipmen maintained its positioning from Saturday to take fourth place in Annapolis, Md.
Â
Soggy conditions greeted the ten teams who are on hand to compete for the oldest trophy in college sailing, as Principal Race Officer Paul Clissold and his race committee team completed four races in unstable light to moderate southerly winds on Saturday.
Â
Navy was up and down on the leaderboard, posting finishes of 5,2,7,3 to hold fourth overall at the end of the first day. Coast Guard sailed strong with 2,1,1,7 finishes to hold the lead after one day while Maine Maritime and Merchant Marine sat in second and third, respectively.
Â
Conditions were wholly different on Sunday with a blustery northwesterly wind and sunny skies, as Navy continued to have trouble on the starting line that forced the Mids into comeback situations in each race. In the end, Navy finished tied for third on points with Maine Maritime but lost out on the tiebreaker. Merchant Marine won the regatta with a strong Sunday performance while Coast Guard stumbled, falling back to second overall.
