Men’s Soccer Set for Tuesday Battle at Maryland

Navy and Maryland Renew Rivalry in First Meeting Since 2015

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Midshipmen and Terrapins will renew an in-state series on Tuesday night that has been dormant since 2015, as the Navy men's soccer team (5-6-4, 2-2-3 PL) is set to take on Maryland (3-7-3, 0-5-2 B1G) in 7 p.m. contest at Ludwig Field in College Park, Md.
 
Serving as the last non-conference match of the regular season for both sides, Tuesday's contest also features two of the winningest active coaches in college soccer, as Navy coach Tim O'Donohue holds a .706 winning percentage (217-77-46) in 18 seasons as a college coach to rank 11th among active Division I coaches while Maryland coach Sasho Cirovski's .691 winning percentage (454-183-73) across 33 seasons ranks 20th in the same list.
 
Veterans of the Patriot League
Since the start of the 2022 season, the Mids have posted a 7-3-9 record against Patriot League opponents, including a 5-3-8 mark in the regular season … Navy was undefeated in its last 10 matches against Patriot League schools before an Oct. 7 loss at Boston University, going 5-0-5 between Oct. 7, 2022 and Oct. 7, 2023 … Over three-plus seasons, the current Navy senior class has posted a 16-9-10 record against Patriot League competition … With 59 career points, David Jackson has accrued 28 of those points against Patriot League competition … Baba Kallie has tallied 10 of his 25 career points against Patriot League teams with four goals and two assists … Jason Aoyama has had 15 of his 19 career points come against league foes.

David Jackson's eight goals are the most by a Navy player since Jacob Williams' eight scores in 2018, while Jackson's 21 points are the most by a Mid since 2014 when Jamie Dubyoski racked up 24 points … Pierce Holbrook's 54 saves this season and 69 saves in 2022 makes him the first Navy goalkeeper with back-to-back 50-save seasons since Mac Burke in 2016-17 (64, 92) … The current Navy seniors have helped the Mids post a 28-19-15 overall record during their four years with the program … Navy is 8-0-2 over the past three seasons when Baba Kallie records a goal, 11-4-5 when David Jackson scores, 4-1-2 in games where Jason Aoyama registers a tally and 2-0-2 when Zach Wagner finds the net.
 
League Leaders
Navy paces the Patriot League with 191 total shots, while the Mids' 22 goals are tied for second in the league … David Jackson ranks second in the league in goals (8), assists (5) and points (21), while his 1.13 shots on goal per game sit third in the league … Andrew Schug's five goals are tied for fourth in the Patriot League and his 1.00 shots on goal per game rank fifth, while A.J Schuetz is second in the league at 2.93 shots per game and fourth with 1.07 shots on goal per contest … Junior goalkeeper Pierce Holbrook leads the league with 54 total saves and his 3.60 saves per game ranks second in the PL.
 
Navy in the National Rankings
One of the nation's best, David Jackson's 21 points rank 26th in Division I while his eight goals are tied for 34th nationally … Jackson is also 43rd in the nation with 1.40 points per game and 50th with 0.53 goals per game … Pierce Holbrook's 54 saves are the 27th-most in the country, with his 1325:23 minutes played ranking 28th nationally … Holbrook's five shutouts are also tied for 30th in Division I.
 
Last Time Out
In a hard-fought battle on Senior Night, Navy gained a point in the league standings with a scoreless draw against Holy Cross Saturday evening … Backed by goalkeeper Pierce Holbrook in his fifth shutout of the campaign, the Midshipmen used a wide shot margin in the second half to outshoot the Crusaders, 17-10, but neither side could find the back of the net in the third-to-last league match of the season … the Mids were the first team to put a shot on goal, as Charlie Kriel's chance near the left post in the 20th minute forced Tristan Stephani to make the kick save … The Crusaders then got a pair of headers off corner kicks in the 27th and 30th minutes, but Holbrook stopped both Nick Hupe and Ethan Gill to keep it scoreless … In the second half, David Jackson's low shot in the 68th minute off a failed clearance was blocked just inside the 18-yard box … Holbrook followed by diving to stop Liam Coffey's one-timer off a free kick in the 78th minute and then stopped Gill once again in the 80th minute, while Andrew Schug put the last Navy chance on net in the 90th minute with a sliding kick that Stephani scooped up … Holbrook wrapped up his night with four saves, while Stephani picked up three saves in his fourth clean sheet of the season … Saturday marked the seventh game for Navy this season in which the offense tallied 15-or-more shots.
 
Scouting Maryland
A season removed from being the 2022 Big Ten Champions, the Terrapins have had rocky road in 2023 that included taking on three ranked teams across their first four games of the campaign … After a 1-6-2 start to the season, Maryland responded with non-conference victories over Bowling Green, 1-0, and Villanova, 6-4, before posting a 2-2 draw at No. 19 Michigan State and falling by a 2-1 score to Indiana on Friday night …  Team scoring leader Stefan Copetti is tied for fifth in the Big Ten with five goals, as the senior has scored four goals in his last four games … Kimani Stewart-Baynes has a team-high five assists and is second on the squad with 11 total points, while Luke van Heukelum is third on the Terps with 10 points (3 goals, 4 assists) … Mikah Seger leads the team with 24 saves in eight games played, while Jamie Lowell has recorded nine saves in seven starts.
 
Series History
Maryland holds the 17-13-9 edge in the all-time series with Navy, as the two sides have split their two most recent meetings … The Mids have gone 4-9-4 against the Terps in College Park, as the last Navy victory in College Park came in 1984 … The longest winning streak in the series was a five-game win streak by the Mids from 1963 to 1967 … Navy's last win over Maryland was a 2-1 victory at Glenn Warner Soccer Facility in 2014, as Daniel Camuti and Jamie Dubyoski scored to knock off the No. 10-ranked Terrapins … The last meeting between the schools was a 1-0 win by No. 4 Maryland in College Park on Sept. 14, 2015, as Navy goalkeeper Jackson Morgan made four saves.
