NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team had two individuals competing at Saturday and Sunday's ICSA Open and Women's Singlehanded National Championships in New Orleans, La., as senior
Trenton Shaw and freshman
Kate Zurinskas closed out the fall season for the Midshipmen.
Â
With 18 sailors selected for each event, winds were from the northeast for most of the regatta with a fair amount of chop.
Â
In the women's field, Zurinskas started off with a few top-10 finishes and was sailing well before having trouble getting off the starting line cleanly, ending the first day with a string of subpar finishes. Zurinskas was able to find her groove on Sunday and posted a much better score line, as she wound up 17th overall in the end.
Â
In the open championship, Shaw was very inconsistent on Saturday, often rounding the first mark near the front of the fleet but struggling to hold onto boats on the downwind legs. Shaw also sailed much better on the second day and was able to finish ninth in the regatta.
Â
"Both fleets were extremely tight and the racing was very exciting all weekend," said head coach
Ian Burman. "It was great to see our sailors improve through the weekend and sail their best at the end."
