CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Navy offshore sailing team began its spring schedule by roaring back on Sunday to claim the overall title at the Southern Collegiate Offshore Regatta in Charleston, South Carolina.
Â
Saturday's conditions at the Carolina Yacht Club were challenging with gusty winds ranging from 20-28 knots, sporadic rain and chilly temperatures, as the Navy crew worked hard to learn their boat but struggled against the bigger boats in their class. The Mids ended the first day with sixth-, fifth- and seventh-place finishes over the opening three races.
Â
Sunday saw Navy make key adjustments and come roaring back to take first overall against 15 other teams following three more races. Conditions started out much lighter requiring major adjustments from Saturday's high winds, but the breeze came back on later Sunday as the Mids stayed on track to take a second- and two first-place finishes while other crews stumbled, propelling Navy ahead in the standings.
Â
The Mids were led by senior skipper Maddy Ploch, with the crew consisting of seniors
Jake Kiggans, Joey Zaladonis and Trey Currie, juniors
Jessie Sedlock, Javier Jimenez-Kane and
Renee Bonner and sophomore Elliott Brandicourt.
Â
Next up for Navy is the Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup on March 10-12 in San Pedro, Calif.
