Most Recent Navy-Colgate Matchup: January 5, 2023Â in Annapolis
Navy was unable to get its offense in gear on January 5Â as it dropped a 64-34 decision to Colgate at Alumni Hall. Drawing within three points late in the first quarter, a lengthy 14-2 drought put the Mids in a double-digit deficit midway through the second period that the visiting Raiders never allowed them to fight out of.
The duo of Kate Samson and Sydne Watts paced Navy's offense as both players reached double figures, 14 for Samson and 10 for Watts. Morganne Andrews added to the Mids' list of superlatives on Thursday as she grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
The action started slowly on Thursday night as the teams combined for just six points over the initial four minutes of play, 4-2 in favor of Colgate. The score increased to 6-4 by the 4:16 mark when Morgan Demos muscled down an offensive rebound and immediately laid the ball in for a Navy basket. Four consecutive points by the Raiders helped the visitors build out a six-point lead before Watts ended the short run with a three-pointer from the top of the arc with 48 seconds left in the quarter. A basket on Colgate's final possession left the score at the end of the period, 12-7.
That late field goal by the Raiders kick-started a 14-2 run of play that broke the game open for the visitors to the tune of 24-9 by the 4:28 mark of the second quarter. A crisp bounce pass from Andrews to an on-coming Gia Pissott resulted in an easy basket for the Mids to end the squad's nearly five-minute scoring drought. Andrews facilitated Navy's next successful hoop as well, as she passed out of the high post to Maren Louridas for the freshman's first three-pointer of the game at 2:07. Louridas' basket made it a 28-14 game. Each team registered one field goal over the final two minutes to send the contest into halftime at 30-16. While Navy was held back by its 28.0 percent (7-25) shooting performance in the first half, a substantial 11-2 advantage in free throw attempts helped Colgate add eight points from the charity stripe.
A quick 5-2 run to open the second half by the Mids drew the host's deficit to 11 points, 32-21. A jumper and 'and-one' conversion by Watts started the streak before Samson spun around her defender in the post for a clean layup at 7:56. A strong 8-0 rebuttal by Colgate over the next 2:02 extended its lead out to a then- game-high 19 points. Back-to-back baskets by Samson and Watts on the ensuing two possessions positively affected the Mids' scoring effort and made it 40-25 by 4:51. Unfortunately, those were the final successful field goals of the quarter for Navy, who added just one free threw to its total. Through 30 minutes of action, it was 49-26, Colgate.
The Mids' offensive struggles carried on into the fourth quarter as the team netted only eight points over the final 10 minutes. The Raiders countered with 15 points of their own to conclude the game at 64-34. Of note, all eight of Navy's points came courtesy of Samson, who shot 4-6 in the period.
For the game, Colgate outshot Navy, 38.6 percent (17-44) to 29.7 (11-37) from the field and 72.2 percent (13-18) to 40.0 (2-5) from the foul line. The Mids had a marginal advantage in three-point shooting, 22.2 percent (2-9) to 13.3 (2-15).

Last Time Out: Wednesday, February 22 vs. American
The Navy women's basketball team found itself in a 40-minute battle against local league foe American on Wednesday night. An early eight-point differential at the end of one quarter of play gave the visiting Eagles (7-20, 6-10 PL) a lead that they wouldn't yield to the Mids (1-26, 1-15 PL) for the remaining 30 minutes of action at Alumni Hall as they eventually walked away with a 61-49 victory.
Morganne Andrews played a leading role in Navy's efforts on Wednesday as the junior forward grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds, including six on the offensive end. Andrews added six points, two assists and one block to round out her final line. Lindsay Llewellyn bolstered the Mids' offensive output with a team-high 15 points.
Trailing by eight points, 17-9 after one quarter of play, Navy immediately got back within four points with quick baskets by Llewellyn and Sydne Watts over the first two minutes of play. With the score 17-13 at 8:03, the teams traded field goals over the next six minutes as the scoreboard slowly increased to a 23-19 mark by 2:12. A 4-0 run to close the quarter by American left Navy down by eight at halftime, 27-19.
Llewellyn sparked the Mids to start the third when Mimi Schrader drove the lane and kicked out to the left wing where Llewellyn sank her second trey of the game. After a Sadie Stetson basket the next time down the court for American, Andrews shrunk Navy's deficit back to five, 29-24, with an athletic offensive rebound and quick put-back at 8:26. Unfortunately for the Mids an 11-4 run over the next seven-plus minutes increased the Eagles' lead out to 12, 40-28. A swap of field goals over the final 30 seconds, two by Navy and one by American left the Mids down 10, 42-32 through three quarters.
Navy continued fighting and aimed to draw within single-digits throughout the entire fourth quarter. Andrews' third successful field goal of the game made it a 44-34 score at 7:42. After a 10-2 run by American, Navy shot its way back into the contest on the strength of three-point baskets by Schrader and Schofield at 3:01 and 0:54, respectively. Down 12, Navy couldn't edge closer as both teams made one final basket over the concluding 20 seconds of play.
For the game, American outshot Navy, 43.1 percent (25-58) to 29.9 (20-67) from the field and 36.4 percent (4-11) to 21.2 (7-33) from three-point range. Neither team had much success from the foul line with the Mids making 66.6 percent (2-3) of their shots versus 63.6 percent (7-11) for the Eagles.
