Most Recent Navy-Lafayette Matchup ... January 11, 2023 in Easton, Pa.
The Navy women's basketball team found itself in a slugfest on Wednesday night on the road at Lafayette. Up by one at halftime, 23-22 and 28-22 early in the third quarter, the Mids were unable to navigate a lengthy 21-0 run by the Leopards in that same third quarter as the complexion of the game completely changed. A valiant challenge by Navy deep into the fourth cut its deficit down to nine points before eventually falling by a final score of 69-57 at the Kirby Sports Center.
Mimi Schrader provided the offensive fireworks for the Mids in their comeback attempt as she scored 10 points in the final 2:43 on her way to matching her career-high with 18 points. Additionally, she tied her season-high with eight rebounds. In her first game back from an offseason shoulder injury, Lindsay Llewellyn backed-up her classmate with eight points and five rebounds in 27 minutes off the bench.
With the score 10-8 in favor of Navy after one quarter of play, a 9-2 start to the second by Lafayette helped the hosts break out to a 17-12 advantage by the 6:10 mark. Showing her senior guile and experience, Llewellyn quickly evened the score at 17-17 with back-to-back baskets coming over a 33-second run of play. The back-and-forth action continued as the Leopards jumped ahead 20-17 before Morganne Andrews tallied four straight points, including a long rebound and a coast-to-coast dribble and drive for an easy layup. Up 21-20 with 3:00 left in the period, both sides added one field goal to send the contest into the halftime intermission with Navy ahead 23-22.
The Mids started the third quarter off fast as they recorded the first five points of the frame with Kate Samson recording an offensive rebound and 'and-one' put back followed up on the next possession by a Schrader layup. With the score 28-22 at 8:48, Navy fell victim to a 21-0 run over the next six-plus minutes. Down 15, 43-28, Schrader stopped the tailspin with a three-pointer from the near corner at 2:40. Lafayette expanded their run out to 28-5 to close the quarter with seven of the final nine points. As a team, the Leopards made 10 field goals, including three three-pointers and five free throws, while defensively causing nine turnovers by the Mids in their explosive quarter of a play.
Down 50-33 after three quarters, Navy was unable to make up any ground on Lafayette for the first seven minutes of the period as both teams tallied 10 points to advance the score to 60-43 by the 2:55 mark. A whirlwind conclusion to the game saw the determined Mids rattle off a 9-1 run over the next 1:56 to draw within nine, 61-52. The duo of Schrader and Sydne Watts bolstered Navy's offensive during this stretch as they combined for three three-pointers, two for Schrader and one for Watts. Clutch free throw shooting by Lafayette in the final 55 seconds, 8-of-10, helped the hosts hold onto the 69-57 victory. Of note, Schrader registered four of the Mids' final five points.
For the game, Navy posted higher shooting percentages from the field, 36.1 percent (22-61) to 34.4 (22-64) and from three-point range, 30.4 percent (7-23) to 29.4 (5-17), but Lafayette held a substantial edge in free throws taking 16 more shots and outshooting Navy, 69.0 percent (20-29) to 46.2 (6-13).

M&M Re-Write the Record Books
Morganne Andrews and Maren Louridas have been attacking the program records this season with a trio of new entries ...
Andrews -- Single-Game Rebounds
The junior grabbed a career-high 19 caroms against Colgate on Feb. 25Â to break her previous personal-best of 17 set four weeks earlier at American (Jan. 28). Andrews' 19 total rebounds are the eighth-most by a Midshipmen in a single game.
Louridas -- Single-Season Minutes
Louridas is closing in on becoming just the 12th player in program history to play 1,000 minutes in a single season. She's currently at 960. Adria Schneck is 58 minutes ahead of her in 10th place at 1,018.
Louridas -- Single-Season Scoring (Freshman)
With 328 points currently, Louridas stands fifth all-time for most points by a freshman. She's 46 points shy of #4 Becky Dowling (374).
Last Time Out: at Colgate, Saturday, Feb. 25 in Hamilton, N.Y.
Suiting up just nine healthy players, including four that played 31 or more minutes on Saturday, the Navy women's basketball team went shot-for-shot with Colgate for all 40 minutes at Cotterell Court. Leading at the half 23-20, the Mids (1-27, 1-16 PL) saw the Raiders (15-13, 9-8 PL) rally in the third quarter before the hosts held onto that advantage over the fourth quarter for the eventual 53-47 victory. Navy tied Colgate once early in the fourth quarter and later drew within one point of the Raiders twice and in a valiant comeback attempt.
For the second straight game, Morganne Andrews was the most valuable player of the game for the Mids as she recorded her second career double-double with a personal-best 18-point outing to go along with a game-high 11 rebounds. Lindsay Llewellyn provided Navy with an early offensive spark as she scored nine of her 12 points in 14 minutes of first half action before foul trouble plagued the remainder of her performance. The freshmen post duo of Morgan Demos and Kate Samson were strong throughout the game on Saturday as they used their size and skills down low to over-match the smaller Colgate frontcourt to the tune of eight points each.
The game on Saturday opened with a significant Navy feel to it as the visitors bolted out to an 11-2 lead by the 4:40 mark of the first quarter. Llewellyn was the early catalyst for the Mids as she hit three of her first four shots, including a corner three-pointer. Samson and Andrews added the other two field goals for Navy during this stretch. The teams traded baskets over the next two minutes to advance the score up to 13-4 for the Mids. A 6-0 close to the quarter by the Raiders tightened the game to 13-10 after 10 minutes of play.
The action in the second quarter began with a much slower scoring pace as both teams only netted four points each over the first five minutes. Ahead 17-14, Demos recorded her second field of the game at 4:34 when she grabbed an offensive rebound and quickly shot back up for the putback layup. Back-to-back makes by Colgate drew the home team back within one point before Demos' number was called again, this time via a Mimi Schrader pass over the top for an easy layup at 3:10. The back-and-forth action continued down the stretch as each side added one more make over the final three minutes to send the teams to the locker room with Navy up 23-20.
The ultra-competitive and tight contest picked right back up in the third quarter with Navy scoring four points, the same as Colgate. With the score 27-24 at the 7:26 mark, consecutive baskets by the Raiders gave the hosts their first lead of the game, 29-27 at 6:36. Llewellyn's first and only made field goal of the second half knotted the score 50 seconds later. A slowly built 8-3 run over the ensuing four-plus minutes helped Colgate push out to a 37-32 advantage. Navy recorded the final three points of the period to cut its deficit to just two, 37-35 at the conclusion of the third quarter.
The Mids initially kept that momentum going into the fourth as Andrews tied the game at 39-39 just 11 seconds into the stanza. Unfortunately for Navy, Colgate had a strong rebuttal to the tied predicament with six unanswered points over the next two minutes. Invigorated on the offensive end, Andrews added to her point total with two more baskets to single-handedly bring her squad back within two. With the score 43-41 at 6:09, the Raiders increased their lead by three points before Andrews kept adding to her career-day with a post-up fadeaway shot at 4:12 and a driving layup at 3:36. Separated by just one point, the teams traded baskets the next two times down the court to make it 48-47 with 2:45 remaining in regulation. An unlucky streak of close calls and ball-handling errors during the final possessions of the game for the Mids resulted in four turnovers and allowed the Raiders to slowly pull away by converting five free throws to seal the 53-47 victory.
For the game, Navy outshot Colgate, 44.0 percent (22-50) to 38.9 (21-54) from the field, though the hosts held a significant 71.4 percent (10-14) to 33.3 (2-6) advantage from the foul line. Neither team spent much time beyond the arc on Saturday as the Raiders were 1-7 from three-point (14.3 percent), while the Mids were 1-9 (11.1 percent). The nine attempts were the second-fewest for Navy in a game this season.
In the rebounding battle, Colgate edged Navy, 35-29 on the strength of a 10-5 advantage in offensive boards. Andrews led all players with 11 caroms. This marks the ninth time this season that the junior has grabbed 10 or more rebounds. Over the past two games, Andrews has averaged 12.0 points and 15.0 rebounds, while shooting 66.6 percent (12-18) from the floor and playing 79 of 80 potential minutes.
