The 26th-ranked Navy squash team (14-17) put forth a hard-fought effort throughout the weekend at the 2023 Mid-Atlantic Squash Conference (MASC) Championship where the Mids finished sixth. Navy fell to top-seeded and sixth-ranked Virginia (12-2) 8-0 in the opener before dropping a 7-2 decision to MIT (10-8) in the second round. Dickinson (3-13) dealt Navy a heartbreaker on Sunday afternoon, as the Mids were stung by the Devils 5-4 in the fifth-place match.

Six different players accounted for Navy's six individual wins over the weekend.

Earning wins in the MIT match were #1 and 2 players Matt Wang (So / Malvern, Pa.) and Millen Randell (Sr / Chicago, Ill.), respectively. Wang avenged his loss to Eli Kramer from a week ago when Kramer outdistanced Wang in a five-gamer in Annapolis. On Saturday, Wang dropped the first game (11-9), but fought back to even the match with an 11-9 victory in the second. He tacked on a pivotal 14-12 win in the third that helped propel him to the match victory by way of an 11-2 win in the fourth. Meanwhile, Randell had Tom Hogan's number for a second week in a row. Randell scored a four-game win over Hogan to pick up his 45th-collegiate victory.

Navy had a solid performance in the middle of its lineup against Dickinson. Bookend wins by #6 Alexander Orr (Fr / Haverford, Pa.) and #3 Henry Sparkman (Jr / Darien, Conn.) gave Navy a 2-0 advantage in the match. Orr gave Navy its first win of the day and became the first Navy player to win 20 matches since 2017-18 (Jack Lentz, Senen Ubina) by way of his sweep (11-3, 11-3, 11-7) over Dickinson's Aidan Ray. Sparkman, meanwhile, earned a 4-game triumph over Mark Naguib. The Navy veteran won the first-two games 11-7 and 11-9, before Naguib extended the match with his 11-9 game three win. Sparkman closed out the match in the fourth with an 11-3 win. Sparkman is tied with Wang for second on the team in the wins column this season with 19.

Tommy Rankin (Sr / Atlanta, Ga.), meanwhile, earned a 3-0 victory (11-7, 11-6, 11-4) over Dickinson's Patrick Noonan in his final appearance at the MASC Championship. Lucas Spiro (So / Buffalo, N.Y.) looked to have his match in control, taking a 2-0 advantage over Fleming. Fleming, however, fought back to take 11-7 and 14-12 wins in the third and fourth games to push it to a fifth. Spiro kept his composure and closed out the match with an 11-7 win to take the match.

What's Ahead
• Navy will have nearly a two-week layoff before playing its regular-season finale at Princeton (Feb. 18 / 2:00 pm).
• The following week (Feb. 24-26), the Mids will compete at the 2023 CSA Team Championship held in Hartford and Middletown, Conn.
