AKRON, Ohio – Navy rifle student-athletes Parker Haydin (Joshua, Texas) and Marleigh Duncan (Wake Forest, N.C.) completed the first day of competition at the 2023 NCAA Rifle Championship at James A. Rhodes Arena on the campus of the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio. Competing as individuals, Haydin posted a smallbore score of 584, while Duncan was two points back with a tally of 582.
 
"It was a decent day for our two athletes, Marleigh and Parker," head coach Mike Anti said at the conclusion of day one of competition. "Standing and kneeling went well for both of them, but they both also struggled a bit in prone. We are looking forward to tomorrow's competition in the air rifle event."
 
Alaska Fairbanks finished the first day of the NCAA Championship in first place with a collective team tally of 2,349 in smallbore. Ole Miss was second with a score of 2,346, while West Virginia was three shots back with a 2,343. Kentucky and Nebraska rounded out the top five with matching scores of 2,340. TCU (2,338), Air Force (2,322), and Murray State (2,322) closed out the team portion of the competition.
 
Haydin finished the smallbore competition in 18th among the 44 shooters in the competition, while Duncan placed 28th in the event.
 
Competing in his first NCAA Championship, Haydin posted scores of 98 and 97 kneeling with performances of 97 and 99 in prone. The freshman notched tallies of 97 and 96 standing for a total of 584.
 
Duncan was consistent in her second NCAA appearance. The sophomore posted marks of 98 and 98 kneeling and scores of 96 and 97 in prone. She closed out the first day with a 98 and 95 standing for a total smallbore performance of 582.
 
Duncan and Haydin conclude competition in the 2023 NCAA Rifle Championship on Saturday as the duo take part in the air rifle competition. Live video and results will be available throughout the match.
