For a second-consecutive week, Navy freshman
Chip Deegan (Newport Beach, Calif.) has been named the Patriot League Men's Golfer of the Week. On Tuesday, Deegan shot a 1-under par 70 in the final round of the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate to secure individual medalist honors for the first time in his career,
Deegan, who led the field of 84 golfers with 17 birdies, opened the tournament with a 1-over par 72 before finding his stride in the second round. The Navy newcomer posted 8 birdies to just a pair of bogeys en route to a 6-under par 65, the low round of the tournament, and helped propel him to the top of the leader board.
Deegan began the final round with a 2-stroke advantage over Fairleigh Dickinson's Pyae Phyo Thu and went on to gain ground. Deegan was 2-under after the first 9, but back-to-back bogeys on the back 9 (12, 13) brought him even. His birdie on the 17th allowed him to finish under for the day and the tournament (72-65-70=207, -6). Thu, who shot par in the final round, placed second at 3-under (71-68-71).
Deegan's 6-under par 207 marked the third-lowest 54-hole score in relation to par in program history, while his 6-under par 65 is the fourth lowest vs. par and 18-hole score in Navy history.
As a team, Navy finished the two-day event tied for fourth alongside Longwood with a 21-over par 873 (295-281-297) and featured a 3-under par 281 in the second round, the lowest score by any team team in the field.
Navy will be back in action next Monday, April 3 at the Columbia Spring Invitational played at the Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Pa.
