Navy Women’s Rugby Resumes Competition With West Chester 7s

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's rugby team travels to West Chester, Pa., on Saturday to compete in the West Chester 7s tournament. Navy will have three teams participating in its second 7s tournament of the spring. 

The remaining field consists of Mount St. Mary's (two teams), Princeton (one team) and West Chester (two teams). The tournament begins at 10 a.m.

The teams will be divided into two groups, with the No. 1 teams playing in group A and Nos. 2 and 3 teams battling in group B. Each team will play three matches and then be reseeded for an additional match to determine placements within their group.

7s vs. 15 Rugby Rules
In addition to the amount of players allowed on the field, 7s and 15s have different match lengths. A 7s match consists of two seven-minute halves and a 15s game is comprised of two 40-minute halves. 

Scoring in 7s is the same as 15s. Teams can score five points on a try, three on a penalty or drop goal kick and two for a made conversion kick following a try. 

Navy In 7s Play This Season
Navy's first 7s tournament of the spring was the Frostburg 7s in Frostburg, Md., back on Feb. 26. Navy's No. 1 team finished with a 2-2 record in the event with wins over Rowan (15-5) and Bloomsburg (15-5). The main squad began the day with a 5-0 loss to Kutztown's No. 1 team and it fell to the Golden Bears again in a knockout playoff match, 19-10. Navy's No. 2 unit went 3-0 with wins over West Virginia (25-7), Kutztown's No. 2 team (30-5) and Binghamton's No. 2 team (39-0).

Opponents In 7s Matches This Season
Host West Chester also competed in the Frostbite 7s in its only 7s action this spring. The No. 1 team compiled a 3-1 record with wins over Marywood (26-5), Binghamton (15-10), and Delaware (41-0). The No. 1 squad fell in the tournament championship to American International College (AIC), 21-0.

Princeton sent one team to compete in the Harvard 7s last Saturday. The Tigers ended with a 0-3 record, losing to AIC (29-17), Harvard (48-0) and Long Island (12-0).

Mount St. Mary's hosted the Mount 7s on March 21 for its lone 7s event of the spring. The blue team finished with a 4-0 record, defeating New Haven (38-0), Mount St. Mary's White (35-0) and Long Island (17-15 and 21-5). The white team lost to Long Island (19-0) to go along with its loss to the blue team, but was victorious over New Haven twice (17-0 and 22-15).

Navy will continue 7s play next Saturday when it competes in the Emperor 7s in Princeton, N.J. The tournament is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
