Navy's squash doubles tandem of
Millen Randell (Sr / Chicago, Ill.) and
Henry Sparkman (Jr / Darien, Conn.) came up short in their bid to win the 2023 U.S. Intercollegiate Doubles Championship held the last three days at the Arlen Specter US Squash Center in Philadelphia. Randell and Sparkman dropped a 3-0 decision in a highly-contested match against Western Ontario's Griffin Manley and Dylan Deverill on Sunday afternoon.
Both of Navy's doubles squads played their way into the semifinals on Sunday morning with Randell and Sparkman knocking off Yale's Merrit Wurts and Taylor Clayton in four games, 11-7, 11-9, 5-11, 11-9. A veteran team, Wurts and Clayton played in the semifinals a year ago only to lose to teammates and eventual National Champions Maxwell Orr and Naddav Raziel in five games.
Meanwhile,
Lucas Spiro (So / Buffalo, N.Y.) and
Alexander Orr (Fr / Haverford, Pa.) faced Manley and Deverill in the other semifinal where the Western Ontario teammates would beat the Navy squad in four games. Spiro and Orr took the opening game 11-9, but Manley and Deverill evened the score with an 11-3 game-two win. The final two games were about as evenly-contested as they could be with Manley and Deverill winning 11-9 and 11-9 to advance to the finals.
