ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's rugby team (8-7-1) competed in the Legacy 7s on Sunday at the Prusmack Rugby Center in Annapolis, Md. Navy's three teams posted a combined record of 7-3 in its final regular-season tournament.
Navy's No. 1 team placed second with a 2-2 record. After dropping their opening match to the West Chester No. 1 team (5-0), the Mids defeated the Penn State No. 1 team (19-12) and the Mount St. Mary's No. 1 team (12-7) to earn a spot in the tournament championship. Navy fell in the finals to Mount St. Mary's (19-5).
Navy's No. 2 unit posted a 3-1 record. The Mids won all three matchups against the No. 2 teams in the field and outscored them, 51-5. Navy shut out West Chester (10-0) and Penn State (12-0) before defeating Mount St. Mary's (29-5). The Mids concluded the day with a loss to the No. 1 Penn State team (36-0).
Navy's No. 3 squad finished with a 2-0 record and earned wins against the West Chester No. 2 team (32-12) and the Penn State No. 2 team (28-15).
Navy No. 1 Team vs. West Chester No. 1 Team (Loss, 5-0)
West Chester made the first push into the 22-meter zone in the 10th minute, but Navy forced a turnover to regain possession.
Abby Hershner flipped the field on a big carry, going from Navy's defensive 22-meter line to West Chester's 22-meter line. Navy's offensive attack was halted by a turnover to return possession to the Golden Rams.
West Chester drove down the field and scored the lone try of the match in the 15th minute of extended time to take the contest by a score of 5-0.
Navy No. 1 Team vs. Penn State No. 1 Team (Win, 19-12)
Penn State took a 7-0 lead on a converted try in the fifth minute, but Navy responded with 19 unanswered points.
Megan Leitz caused a key turnover at midfield and used a big carry to push the Mids inside the 22-meter line for the first time.
Siena Hall found a crease on the edge of Penn State's defense to score Navy's first try in the sixth minute. Hershner made the conversion kick to tie the match, 7-7.
Marissa Meyer received the kickoff to begin the second half and ran the ball to Penn State's 22-meter line. She made a heads-up pass to a wide open
Chrissi Foster, who sprinted into the try zone to give the Mids a 12-7 advantage in the seventh minute.
Leitz added Navy's third try in the 12th minute and Hershner made her second conversion kick of the day to extend Navy's lead to 19-7.
The Nittany Lions answered with a try in the 13th minute, but the Mids kicked the ball out of bounds after receiving the kickoff to end the match.
Navy No. 1 vs. Mount St. Mary's No. 1 (Win, 12-7)
The Mountaineers kept possession in Navy's defensive zone over the first five minutes of the game and were awarded a penalty try at the 5:45 mark to put the Mids in a 7-0 hole.
Leitz provided a big carry following the kickoff the give Navy possession inside the 22-meter line. Mount St. Mary's didn't surrender any additional territory over the final few minutes to hold its seven-point advantage at the halfway point.
Navy evened the score in the ninth minute on a try from Hall and a conversion kick from Hershner.
Foster was only a few meters away from scoring a go-ahead try in the 10th minute, but dropped the ball as she attempted to dive into the try zone.
The Mids retook possession due to Mount St. Mary's kicking the ball out of bounds. Hall provided the winning score just two seconds before the 14th minute to win Navy the match, 12-7.
Navy No. 1 Team vs. Mount St. Mary's No. 1 Team (Loss, 17-5)
The Mids received the opening kick and were forced inside their defensive 22-meter line by the pressure from the Mountaineers. Mount St. Mary's forced a turnover in the second minute and it picked up the loose ball to score the opening try of the match to take a 5-0 lead.
The Mountaineers marched into their offensive zone with a big run following a penalty against Navy to begin the second half. Mount St. Mary's attempted to score down the left sideline, but was penalized for a forward pass to give possession back to the Mids.
Meyer scored her first try of the tournament in the 10th minute after splitting two defenders and running over 50 meters to tie the match, 5-5.
The Mountaineers retook the lead with a try in the 11th minute and made a crucial conversion kick to put Navy behind, 12-5.
The Mids sped up their offensive attack with little time remaining in the match, but mishandled a pass to turn the ball over back to Mount St. Mary's. The Mountaineers ended the match with a try in the 14th minute to win the championship match, 17-5.
Navy No. 2 Team vs. West Chester No. 2 Team (Win, 10-0)
The Mids pushed inside the five-meter line on a huge gain from
Elizabeth Dunne on the first possession. However, Dunne was forced out of bounds before she could score, granting a lineout to West Chester. Navy took back possession with a steal and
Lindy Gostage powered through West Chester's defense to score a try in the fourth minute to put the Mids up, 5-0.
Naomi Nutwell scored Navy's second try of the half just before the seventh minute to extend the lead to 10-0.
The Golden Rams had possession inside Navy's 22-meter line for a majority of the second half, but the Mids kept them out of the try zone to win the match, 10-0.
Navy No. 2 Team vs. Penn State No. 2 Team (Win, 12-0)
Morgan McPeak scored a try just 45 seconds into the match against the Nittany Lions.
Sydney Boutz nailed the conversion kick following the score to give Navy a 7-0 lead.
Anastasia Nguyen broke through Penn State's defensive line in the 11th minute and had a clear path to the try zone. Before she could touch the ball down in the try zone, she was issued a penalty to erase the scoring chance.
The Mids retook possession on a turnover and Nguyen ran into the try zone for a successful try for the final score of the contest.
Navy No. 2 Team vs. Mount St. Mary's No. 2 Team (Win, 29-5)
The Mids built a 22-0 lead in the first half on four tries. Dunne scored the first try just 33 seconds into the match. McPeak and Nutwell scored their second tries of the day in the second and fourth minutes to build Navy's lead to 15-0.
Alexis De Paulitte ended the first half with a try and Gostage nailed the first conversion kick of the game to increase Navy's lead to 22-0.
The Mountaineers scored their only try of the match in the eighth minute.
Jamie Wheeler capped off the high-scoring affair with a try in the 11th minute. Boutz added an additional two points with a conversion kick to make the score, 29-5.
Navy No. 2 Team vs. Penn State No. 1 Team (Loss, 36-0)
Navy's No. 2 team faced the No. 1 Penn State team for an additional match following the play-in matches.
Penn State built a 17-0 lead in the first half on three tries. The Nittany Lions scored a converted try in the first minute and a pair of unconverted tries in the third and fourth.
Penn State added an additional 19 points to the scoreboard in the second half with an unconverted try in the eighth minute and converted tries in the 10th and 13th minutes.
Navy No. 3 Team vs. West Chester No. 2 Team (Win, 32-12)
The Mids and Golden Rams both struck for a pair of tries in the first half.
West Chester opened the scoring with a try in the first minute to grab a 5-0 advantage.
Catie Gajski provided a quick responce for Navy with a try in the third minute to tie the match, 5-5.
The Mids had the ball in their offensive half of the pitch, but turned the ball over. The turnover gave West Chester a clear path to the try zone for its second score in the fifth minute. The Golden Rams made the conversion kick to put the Mids in a 12-5 deficit.
Navy tied the match, 12-12, in the seventh minute of extended time on a penalty try from
Grace Oliver.
Aliyah Alexander gave the Mids their first lead with a try in the eighth minute.
West Chester began to drive into Navy territory, but
Emma Magness forced a turnover and ran the ball over 50 meters for a try to extend Navy's lead to 22-12.
Oliver and
Kimberly Van added a pair of tries in the 12th and 13th minutes to win Navy the contest, 32-12.
Navy No. 3 Team vs. Penn State No. 2 Team (Win, 28-15)
The Mids fell behind by two scores after the Nittany Lions struck for unconverted tries in the second and fourth minutes.
Kerra Miller scored the first try for Navy in the fifth minute. After receiving a pass near Navy's 10-meter line, she cut down the left sideline and found the try zone in the fifth minute. Van made the ensuring conversion kick to bring Navy within three points.
The Nittany Lions attempted to kick the ball out of bounds to end the half, but Navy forced a turnover to regain possession in extra time. Miller powered through two Penn State tackles and scored her second try of the match to put Navy in front. Van made the conversion kick to give the Mids a 14-10 advantage at intermission.
Navy took an 11-point lead after a try from Alexander in the 10th minute and a made conversion kick by Oliver.
The Nittany Lions scored a try to come within six points in the 12th minute, but Alexander ended the match with a try four seconds before the 14th minute. Magness also added a conversion kick to make the final score, 28-15.
