Heavyweight Crew to Wrap Up Regular Season in New Jersey

Navy to race versus Columbia and Hobart in West Windsor

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The No. 16 Navy heavyweight rowing team is scheduled to wrap up its 2023 regular season campaign on Sunday with neutral site action versus No. 22 Columbia and Hobart at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. Looking to finish their regular season with momentum before they partake in postseason training leading up to the Eastern Sprints in mid-May and the IRA National Championship in early June, the Mids (1-8) will go up against the Lions (1-4) and Statesmen (1-1) in a series of four races beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday.

In preparation for the postseason, the teams will kick off the action on Mercer Lake with fourth varsity eight contest at 9:00 a.m. followed 20 minutes later by the third varsities. These initial two contests will be head-to-head matchups between Navy and Hobart. Columbia joins the competition for three-boat second varsity action at 9:40 a.m. The regatta will round out at 10:00 a.m. with the Stevenson Cup on the line for the highest finishing crew amongst Navy and Columbia; Hobart will be a guest in the V8 contest.

Most Recent Stevenson Cup Competition: May 1, 2022 in West Windsor, N.J.
The No. 13 Navy heavyweight rowing team finished its 2022 regular season with a strong four-for-four showing in a quad meet at Mercer Lake on Sunday afternoon. Competing against No. 17 Columbia, R/V Hobart and George Washington, Navy collected wins in the first and second varsity eight classifications, as well as in the varsity four and fifth varsity/novice eight events.

The Stevenson Cup was on the line in the following race between the first varsities from Navy and Columbia. Close throughout the majority of the contest, the Mids pulled away for a 3.2-second victory over the Lions, 5:53.2 to 5:56.4. That win was the third consecutive for Navy in the Stevenson Cup rivalry. Competing as guests, G.W. and Hobart finished third and fourth at 6:00.4 and 6:10.6, respectively.

First presented in 1950 to winner of the first varsity race between Navy and Columbia and named in honor of Maxwell Stevenson, an early chairman of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association, the Mids hold a substantial, 28-6 lead in overall wins. 

Last Time Out: April 22 vs. Harvard & Penn
Racing for the Adams Cup for the 85th time in the trophy's existence, the No. 7 Harvard Crimson will take the cup back home to Boston after a successful showing versus the No. 14 Penn Quakers and No. 17 Navy Midshipmen on Saturday, April 22. Competing over a five-race slate on the Schuylkill River, the Navy heavyweight rowing team turned in three runner-up results in its penultimate regular season race.

The third race of the competition showcased the first varsities from the three rival schools battling it out for Adams Cup. Harvard illustrated why it's ranked seventh in this week's national poll and captured the hardware with a 5:36.5 effort. Penn was exactly three seconds back in second place at 5:39.5, while Navy finished in third at 5:45.9.
