ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's rugby team looks to defend its Emperor 7s title this Saturday in Princeton, N.J. Navy will have three teams participating in the tournament. 

The remaining field consists of Penn State (two teams), Princeton (one team) and West Chester (two teams). The tournament begins at 10 a.m.

The teams will be divided into two groups, with the No. 1 teams playing in group A and Nos. 2 and 3 teams competing in group B. Each team will play three matches and then be reseeded for an additional match to determine placements within their group.

Navy placed first in group A and group B in last year's event after both teams finished undefeated.

Meyer Nominated For MA Sorensen Award
Marissa Meyer was one of 17 athletes nominated for the 2023 MA Sorensen Award. The Washington Athletic Club has presented the award annually since 2016 to the top women's college rugby player in the country.

The nominees will be narrowed down to four finalists by public vote. Fans have until Sunday, April 9 to submit votes. Ballots can be cast by clicking HERE. 

The winner will be chosen by a panel of experts, which includes Sorensen. The award will be presented at the gala event hosted by the Washington Athletic Club in Seattle, Wash., on June 10.

Last Time Out (West Chester 7s)
Navy sent three teams to compete in the West Chester 7s last Saturday and finished with a combined record of 5-2-1.
 
Navy's No. 1 team compiled a 1-2-1 record and placed third in the group A bracket. The Mids defeated Princeton (10-5) in the third-place match for their lone victory in West Chester. The squad lost to the No. 1 West Chester team (26-7) and Princeton (19-14) earlier in the tournament. The No. 1 unit also tied the No. 1 Mount St. Mary's team, 17-17.
 
Navy's Nos. 2 and 3 teams both finished with a record of 2-0 in the group B bracket. The No. 2 team defeated the Mount St. Mary's No. 2 team (10-5) and the West Chester No. 2 team (32-0). The No. 3 squad defeated the No. 2 West Chester team (5-0) and the No. 2 Mount St. Mary's team (10-7). Navy's group B teams opted to not compete against each other in the first-place playoff bout. 

Opponents In 7s Matches This Season
Princeton and West Chester also competed at the West Chester 7s. 

West Chester's No. 1 team won the tournament with a 3-1 record. The Golden Rams defeated Princeton (12-7) and lost to the Mount St. Mary's No. 1 team (29-7) in addition to their win over Navy in the play-in matches. WCU avenged its loss to the Mountaineers in the tournament championship with a 12-5 win. 

Princeton finished with a 1-3 record in West Chester. Along with their matches against Navy and West Chester, the Tigers fell to the Mount St. Mary's No. 1 squad, 17-14. 

The Nittany Lions will participate in their second 7s event of the season after competing in the Life 7s last Saturday. Penn State lost to Life (40-0) in its only match of the tournament.

Navy competes in Annapolis for the first time since Nov. 19 when it hosts the Legacy 7s Sunday, April 16. The tournament is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
