BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Patriot League announced it 2023 All-Academic Team on Monday and the Navy women's rowing team was at the forefront of the release with a league-high three honorees. A trio of first-time recipients from the Mids' first varsity eight crew were selected for their success on the water and in the classroom in Annapolis: senior
Irene Norman (Aurora, Ohio), junior
Maeve Swick (Annapolis, Md.) and sophomore
Tenlea Radack (Washington, D.C.).
Spearheading Navy's effort at the Patriot League Championship on May 12, Radack rowed from the second seat and Norman was powering the Mids' from the fourth seat, while Swick guided the first varsity eight boat as the coxswain. After Boston University and Navy went one-two in the first two races (V4 and 2V8) of the Patriot League Championship on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Massachusetts, the Mids' first varsity eight knew that a win in the final contest of the three-race slate would clinch the league title. Similar to the previous two events, BU and Navy were the class of the V8 field with the Terriers breaking out to an early lead before the Mids valiantly kept fighting and burst past the leaders over the final 400 meters to capture the 6:36.892 to 6:40.440 win. That victory earned Navy's V8 the 2023 Patriot League Boat of the Year award. For their efforts, Radack and Swick were both named to the All-Patriot League First Team on Thursday.
In the classroom, Norman has posted a 3.99 grade point average as an honors oceanography major, while Radack is studying honors mathematics with a 3.96 GPA and Swick is quantitative economics major with a 3.93 GPA. (All of the grade point averages were cumulative through the end of the Fall semester.) Norman led the way for the trio as she's ranked top-20 in both the Naval Academy's Overall Order of Merit and Military Order of Merit and will commission on Friday into the United States Marine Corps.
To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.
