Ten Midshipmen Earn CSC Academic All-District Honors

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy women's lacrosse player Erin Carson (Sr., New Albany, Ohio), gymnast Ian Dinmore (Jr., Odenton, Md.), wrestler Grady Griess (Jr., Grand Island, Neb.), water polo player Peter Hillen (Sr., Orinda, Calif.), rifle athlete Clarissa Layland (Jr., Granbury, Texas), water polo player Graham Lindner (Sr., Bel Air, Md.), women's rower Irene Norman (Sr. / Aurora, Ohio), women's lacrosse player Charlotte Ryan (Sr., Tully, N.Y.), men's golfer Keegan Shreves (Sr., Potomac, Md.) and women's rower Maeve Swick (Jr., Annapolis, Md.) garnered Academic All-District II accolades for at-large sports from the College Sports Communicators (CSC) on Tuesday. All 10 now advance to the national ballot that will determine CSC's Academic All-America Teams, which will be announced June 21 (men) and 22 (women).
 
To be eligible for the district ballot, student-athletes must have attained a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.30 through the end of the 2022 fall semester, be at a minimum a sophomore academically and be a starter or key reserve on their respective team.
 
The at-large sports program includes of women's beach volleyball, women's bowling, women's crew, fencing, women's field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, men's volleyball, water polo and men's wrestling. CSC's District II consists of Division I schools located in Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Washington, D.C.
 
Erin Carson, Women's Lacrosse
Carson is a four-year letterwinner for the Navy women's lacrosse team. The senior is an honors oceanography major with a 3.79 GPA. Carson earned Academic All-Patriot League honors in 2021, while also being named to the Superintendent's List twice, Commandant's List seven times and Dean's List four times. This season, the defender played and started all 19 games, registered 17 caused turnovers with 13 ground balls and a draw control. Carson was part of a Navy defense that has limited eight opponents (four Patriot League) to single-digit goals.
 
Ian Dinmore, Gymnastics
The 2023 ELITE 90 award winner for NCAA Men's Gymnastics, Dinmore has been a standout in the classroom for three years at the Naval Academy and broke through this spring as one of the leaders on the gymnastics team. In the gym, Dinmore appeared in 11 meets in 2023 and finished the regular season ranked third in the ECAC conference and 27th in the nation for the floor exercise with a 13.613 qualifying average. During the postseason, he finished fourth at the ECAC Championship and seventh at the USAG Collegiate Championship before making the event finals at the NCAA Championships. Additionally, he competed on the pommel horse six times for the Mids. During his studies at the Naval Academy, Dinmore has compiled a 4.00 cumulative GPA. Announced as a Trident Scholar for the 2023-24 academic year, he ranks No. 1 in the Class of 2024, while also being ranked in the top 20 for Military Order of Merit. He has twice been honored as a College Gymnastics Association All-America Scholar-Athlete.
 
Grady Griess, Wrestling
Griess owns a 3.88 GPA and has garnered academic honors from the Academy in all six completed semesters. The Grand Island, Neb., native won the 99th individual Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) title in program history this past season. His placement earned him a spot to wrestle at the NCAA Championship for the first time in his career. He led Navy with 32 victories to become the 50th wrestler in program history to post 30 or more wins in a season. Navy's heavyweight was also selected as one of 105 student-athletes to earn EIWA All-Academic honors.
 
Peter Hillen, Water Polo
For the second-consecutive year, Hillen has been named a CSC Academic All-District honoree. The senior, who has a 4.00 GPA in physics, was a Third-Team Academic All-American as a junior and entered his final semester at the Academy ranked No. 1 in Overall and Academic Order of Merit. Hillen is a four-time Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-Academic honoree, while also being named to the Superintendent's (6x), Commandant's (7x) and Dean's Lists. This season, Hillen played in 29 of 31 games on defense, finishing with 10 goals, five assists, 14 steals, and 11 ejections drawn.
 
Clarissa Layland, Rifle
Layland, a junior ocean engineering major, earned CSC Academic All-District recognition for the first time in her career. She was tabbed a Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) Scholastic All-American twice (2021, '22), while being selected as Navy's Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She was also named to the Superintendent's (2x), Commandant's (4x) and Dean's Lists (3x). This season, Layland earned Honorable Mention All-GARC honors for air rifle, finishing the year with a 592.4 average in air rifle, 571.4 in smallbore, and 1,163.8 in aggregate.
 
Graham Lindner, Water Polo
Lindner claimed CSC Academic All-District distinction for the first time as a senior. The honors robotics and control engineering major boasted a 4.00 GPA and entered the semester second in Overall Order of Merit behind teammate Hillen, while ranking first in Academic and Military Order of Merit. Lindner is a four-time ACWPC All-Academic honoree, who has also been named to the Superintendent's (7x) and Commandant's Lists (7x). This season, he played in 30 of 31 games, finishing with eight goals, seven assists, 13 steals, and 10 ejections drawn.
 
Irene Norman, Women's Rowing
A member of Navy's Patriot League Championship-winning first varsity eight crew, Norman was recognized on Monday as a member of the conference's 2023 all-academic team. Coming to the Naval Academy as a tennis player, Norman joined the crew program prior to the 2021-22 season and thrived this spring racing with the Mids' top boat. In the lead-up to the boat's Patriot League Championship title and Patriot League Boat of the Year honor, Norman and the V8 were named the Patriot League Boat of the Week on April 26 following their regular-season effort at the Lake Wheeler Invitational. In the classroom, Norman finished her academic career as an honors oceanography major with a 3.98 GPA. A highly-regarded member of the Bancroft Hall community, Norman will commission this Friday among the top 20 of the Class of 2023 in Overall Order of Merit and Military Order of Merit. The Ohio native's service assignment is Marine Corps ground.
 
Charlotte Ryan, Women's Lacrosse
Majoring in mechanical engineering, Ryan is a six-time member of the Superintendent's List, while also being named to the Commandant's List seven times. She earned Patriot League Academic Honor Roll each season and was selected to the conference's all-academic team as a senior. The offensive team captain received submarines as her service assignment and upon commissioning at the end of the week, Ryan will continue her education in graduate school at the University of Southhampton in England to earn her masters before reporting to Charleston, S.C. for Naval Nuclear Power Training Command Nuclear Power School. Ryan concluded the season with 27 goals, 10 assists, 37 points, 15 ground balls, 11 draw controls and four caused turnovers.
 
Keegan Shreves, Men's Golf
A first-time CSC All-District II selection, Shreves will graduate on Friday having earned a 3.77 cumulative GPA in quantitative economics. A two-time member of the Academic All-Patriot League Men's Golf Team, the 2022-23 men's golf captain has earned recognition on the Superintendent's (2x), Commandant's (8x) and Dean's Lists (5x) in his eight semesters at the Academy. Shreves, who will be commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, is ranked among the top 20 percent in the Class of 2023 (1,045) in Overall, Academic and Military Order of Merit. The four-year letter winner owned a team-low 74.29 stroke average this season and included appearances in 10 tournaments. Shreves earned medalist honors for the first time in his collegiate career by capturing the win by five strokes at the inaugural Commander-In-Chief's Cup with a 2-over par 218. He closed out the year by earning a top-10 finish at the Patriot League Championship for a third-consecutive year. He is one of only six players in Navy men's golf history to earn All-Patriot League recognition three or more times.
 
Maeve Swick, Women's Rowing
A first-year coxswain for the women's first varsity eight crew, Swick successfully transitioned over from the other side of Hubbard Hall where she served as a coxswain as part of the heavyweight men's program. Guiding the women's first varsity throughout most of the regular season and into the postseason, Swick and the V8 earned Patriot League Boat of the Week honors on April 26 before taking home the gold at the league's year-end championship on May 12. Trailing Boston University in a winner-takes-all grand final, Swick and the V8 crew stormed from behind over the final 400 meters to secure the victory and the team title for Navy women's rowing. That win gave the Mids an automatic berth into this weekend's 2023 NCAA Championship. Academically, Swick is studying quantitative economics and had a 3.93 GPA through her first-five completed semesters. For her success at Navy, Swick ranked among the top 100 in both Overall Order of Merit and Academic Order of Merit at the end of the fall semester. She's been recognized on the Commandant's List each semester.
