ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy offshore sailing team completed a pair of races last week in Newport, R.I., as the Midshipmen opened up their summer racing slate.
Â
Starting off with two boats sailing in the yearly Annapolis to Newport Race, Navy finished second and third in both their class and the overall fleet on Tuesday in what was an incredibly challenging race. Rising senior skipper Phil Pacheco and senior XO
Dylan Medina led their crew aboard
Defiance to second place, while senior skipper
Aidan Johnson and senior XO
Jaden Tabak led their
Integrity crew to a third-place finish.
Â
The Mids then had three crews competing in the New York Yacht Club's 169th Annual Regatta this past weekend. Pacheco led his
Defiance crew to fourth in their 13-boat ORC E class, two points ahead of Johnson and
Integrity, who took fifth place in the class. The third Navy boat was
Poseidon and senior skipper
Rowan Suarez, finishing ninth in its class.
Â
Pacheco's crew included Medina, senior
Frank Carter, junior Ethan Sullivan and sophomores Eva White, Matt Irving, Kaili Williams and Kai Widick, while Johnson's crew consisted of Tabak, senior
Kobe Nguyen, juniors
Austin Nolan and
Jack Ubert and sophomores Maddie Nienow, Jordan Hall and Nancy Rhodes. Suarez's crew featured senior XO
Henry Isom, fellow senior
Sydney Richardson, juniors Nick Gibbons and
Nathan Broomfield and sophomores Myles McGrail, Josh Fisher, Cory Daut and Conner McKee.
Â
Next up for Pacheco and Johnson's crews will be the 630-mile Marion to Bermuda Race, starting next Friday, while Suarez and the
Poseidon crew head to Martha's Vineyard for the Edgartown YC Regatta next Thursday and Friday alongside the Farr 40
Zephyr and its senior skipper, Rick Irving.
