WEST WINDSOR, N.J. -- Poor weather led to an abbreviated opening day of competition Friday at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championship on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J. Navy's first and second varsity eight boats were able to finish two rounds of racing prior to the afternoon session being halted.
Each of Navy's entries in those competitions will compete Saturday in their respective C/D semifinal.
Navy's third varsity eight and varsity four boats will compete Saturday in repechage races that were originally scheduled for Friday afternoon.
First Varsity Eight
Navy began the day by placing fifth in its heat with a time of 5:59.210. Yale won the race with an effort of 5:34.736. The result sent the Mids into Friday afternoon's repechage race.
Navy would place second to Dartmouth in the repechage race. The Big Green recorded a time of 6:01.716 to win the race by almost nine seconds over the Mids (6:10.144). The result sent Navy into Saturday's C/D semifinal, which will be contested Saturday.
Second Varsity Eight
The Mids posted a time of 5:59.411 to place fourth in their morning trial heat. A time of 5:43.049 was recorded by Washington to win the race. The result placed Navy into an afternoon repechage race.
Navy finished in the middle of a three-boat repechage race. Boston U. won the race in a time of 6:05.374 to advance to the A/B semifinal on Saturday. The Mids traversed the course in a clocking of 6:11.842 to finish in second place, with UC San Diego checking in with an effort of 6:17.204 to place third.
Navy will compete Saturday in the C/D Semifinal.
Third Varsity Eight
Navy's entry completed its heat in a time of 6:11.973, which was a fourth-place effort. Yale's clocking of 5:49.115 gave the Bulldogs the victory by 1.2 seconds over Dartmouth.
The team's repechage race slated to be held in the afternoon was postponed due to the poor weather.
Varsity Four
There were 31 boats entered into the event, which began with a head race time trial (one boat launches at a time). Navy posted a time of 6:26.134 to finish in sixth place. California won the race in a time of 6:16.974. The Mids finished 2.1 seconds behind third-place boat Florida Tech (6:24.062), with Northeastern (6:24.414) and Dartmouth (6:24.501) also finishing just ahead of Navy.
The result qualified the Mids for the A/B/C semifinal slated for later in the day on Friday, but it too was postponed to Saturday.
